I don't disagree that Israel has a right to go after Hamas and that there will be collateral deaths. But what they don't have is a license to indiscriminate killing or to force civilians from their homes/to become refugees otherwise death.

But this is the fundamental dilemma. They can't do nothing, but if they mass displace Palestinians and cause mass civilian deaths, and without taking out Hamas, I can easily foresee a far worse situation that invites attacks from others in the area.

I'd add, however, that my issue is not with that dilemma, it's w/some here who seemed to support wiping out all Palestinians. It's deja vu all over again, not to mention being of the exact flavor of thinking that Hamas wants of Israel.

Nobody is saying self-defense is evil.

When these events happen, we invariably get the “turn their desert into glass” people. The “just level the whole thing” people. That type of thinking isn’t self defense, it would just be revenge killings. Mass murder, and on a far greater scale than the terrorists. Yes, that type of “thinking” is pure evil.

Obviously the government of Israel has to show they are doing something in response. The most logical thing is to strike anywhere they can detect rockets coming from. Try and hit some ammo caches. Degrade the ability of Hamas to continue attacking. The military capabilities are highly asymmetrical, so Israel’s military should be able to destroy those activities relatively quickly. If they had intel on the location of Hamas leaders, that of course would be fair game to go after as well. But I think most assume the leaders are hiding in bunkers and tunnels, so if the actual objective is to root out Hamas, it may not be obtainable from the air or bombing buildings. They may have to retake control over Gaza on the ground. Quite a messy proposition, but it may be unavoidable.

This is where and eye for an eye makes the most sense. One act is bad and the other is payback. Sorry... but NO crime should go unpunished... lest you want that crime to be repeated over and over, again and again.

No, you're lying now. They don't "just live in the same place." Hamas deliberately puts themselves where people are so if Israel fights them, they get the photo op of dead Palestinians... and they get what they love most in life second only to killing as many Jews as possible, and that's playing the victim.

What they are doing is out there

The tony Rimal district of Gaza City, an important gathering spot for Hamas leaders, has been reduced to rubble by Israeli air strikes while the sleek city of Tel Aviv and Ben Gurion airport came under a large-scale Hamas rocket barrage on Tuesday.

“The main strike conducted last night targeted the Rimal area in Gaza,” Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) spokesman Rear Adm. Daniel Hagari said in a briefing on Tuesday. “The area is a symbol of luxury in the center of Gaza and has very significant meaning to senior Hamas leaders and operatives.”

Those are called cities and towns man. Its like saying drug dealers are using people in high crime areas as 'human shields' because they do crime where they live. Fortunately even the cops seem to have enough shame to not say something so ridiculous. I guess they could build a fortress of evil and decide to live there, so on that point you got me.

I think this is still something that waits until the end of the war.

If the Palestinians are given a real opportunity to move somewhere safe, leveling Gaza after what has transpired would not be "pure evil."

Maybe they should just fire as many rockets into Gaza as possible... maybe then you guys won't mind.

You really just don't have a clue about what they do. It's that or you're lying.

No one would suggest Israel is using human shields because their government and service members live in civilian centers and they can use their civilian dead as propaganda too, that would be ridiculous, yet some people seem to take Hamas uses humans shields so they can make videos seriously. But I suppose when you cant concede some basic humanity to both sides that's how it goes.

Do you think Israel hides arms caches under kindergarten playgrounds? Why do you think Hamas does that?

Yep. This is how you protect Israel, who at this point deserves infinitely more sympathy and benefit of the doubt than Hamas or the people who elected Hamas.

Hamas is worse. They set up command centers in areas like under hospitals. You can argue they have no choice asymmetrically. But is it worse

I don't know where they hide their nuclear weapons. I doubt they hide small arms caches because they are the occupier, not a resistance group. IF they were, they would probably adopt similar tactics.

    From the Washington Post:

“Hamas has buried caches of arms and explosives under its own kindergarten playgrounds,” referencing a 2001 State Department report that said a Hamas leader was arrested after “additional explosives in a Gaza kindergarten” were discovered.

For years, Hamas has “planned carefully for a major Israeli invasion,” according to a Washington Institute for Near East Policy report. In addition to an elaborate tunnel system, there was the “integral use of civilians and civilian facilities as cover for its military activity; schools, mosques, hospitals, and civilian housing became weapons storage facilities, Hamas headquarters, and fighting positions … IDF imagery and combat intelligence revealed extensive use of civilian facilities.”
