Iran is almost $1T in debt (probably passed the $1T mark this year), $6B is a drop in the bucket. If we can all understand how they could play an accounting shell game to spend that $6B however they want, then we all understand that they already are and have been playing that accounting shell game, $6B here or there notwithstanding.

I think you are correct with your last sentence. I’ve been having that discussion with my wife. Just as unfortunate is that our president likely has to do the same re US hostages. I can’t think of a way for the US to negotiate for our hostages while we materially support Israel laying waste to Gaza and it’s inhabitants (likely including any remaining living hostages). And I am totally against negotiating with any terrorists. Both govts have to weigh the costs of door to door urban warfare in such tight quarters vs the potential for substantial successful rescue. Thinking that my earlier posts about a landfill heap and nothing left standing along the entire eastern mile of Gaza might not be unrealistic, and that’s the asymmetric biblical reaction that worries me as potentially leading to outside escalation.

Yep. Got it. That was the point of taking the hostages. That’s why I believe Israel needs to set its jaw and see this thing through, assuming the hostages are already dead. Put out the message any militant who shows up at an IDF checkpoint with a living hostage may have safe passage out of Gaza (1:1 only). Also try to rescue them if you get actionable intel. Other than that, continue the operation and don’t stop short of a Hamas surrender.

    Incredible rescue......

"In the early morning hours, the rescue team, aided by a drone and the outline of the house that their son had drawn, burst into the home through the roof with a special rescue dog, killing all four terrorists."

Agreed but it may take some heavy-duty rationalization of the personal morals. Sad but

I’d change “illusions” to delusions and there never should have been any delusions about Iran’s intentions, ever. Plenty of well-respected American officials have warned of this very thing happening for years, decades. It’s not what’s done is done, because it should have never happened in the first place. We allowed certain jackals to lie to us and lead us to this place. A damned fool did it the first time and lied to themselves, along with all of us. Doing it again would not qualify for a fool’s status. It would qualify as treason against the United States of America.

Sorry, but in war, you have to subordinate values to interests whenever there is a direct conflict. Our history is replete with examples of where it was necessary. In its short history, Israel has even more. We have great seas between us and our enemies. For Israel, it is a very short distance for them, between their enemies and a great sea.

Love how the elephant in the room is being ignored. Name the one President in the last 25 years who did anything of consequence to knock Iran down a peg or two. I’ll hang up and listen..

I feel the same, too, my friend. I get emotional just thinking about it, especially for the Americans, our blood, who were just visiting and got caught up in someone else’s war. My greatest hopes for rescue go with them, but my worst fears are that they are already gone. If unavoidable, I hope it’s quick.

Yep, imagine the response if missiles were being lobbed into San Diego and armed bands were coming across the border to kidnap and slaughter our citizens? Kiss Baja goodbye.

You're referring to this guy who may have unintentionally provided Iran with intelligence which it then passed on to Hamas?
Donald Trump's Israel intel leak under scrutiny after Hamas attack
In May 2017, the former president defended his actions after he was found to have discussed sensitive details about an alleged Islamic State (ISIS) plot with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and Ambassador Sergey Kislyak in the Oval Office. Trump said he had an absolute right to do so. The intel was said to have been provided to the U.S. from Israel.

It was suggested at the time that the former president's handing over sensitive information from Israel could have damaged the relationship between the two countries. It also could have raised the possibility that the details could be passed from Russia to Iran, the Gulf nation that is a fierce adversary of Israel and has long supported Hamas.

Thom Hartmann, author and political commentator, posted on X, formerly Twitter, while sharing a 2017 article from The Washington Post: "Hamas apparently knew how to get around Israel's Iron Dome defenses. They probably learned this from Iran. Iran almost certainly got the information from Russia. And who gave it to Russia? Sure looks like it was Donald Trump, at the request of Putin."
While obviously based on speculation Trump's carelessness with classified data and affinity towards Putin could have been a factor albeit a small one in the success of Hamas. Waiting for standard response to the effect that I have TDS and that the Orange One lives rent free in my head.

Really, really, really doubt that Israel would engage Syria in conventional war (or that it threatened to) or that U.S. is prepared to militarily intervene in any way except in the astronomically unlikely event of a Russian attack.
