JERUSALEM — The ruling Hamas militant group in the Gaza Strip carried out an unprecedented, multi-front attack on Israel at daybreak Saturday, firing thousands of rockets as dozens of Hamas fighters infiltrated the heavily fortified border in several locations by air, land and sea and catching the country off-guard on a major holiday, killing at least 22 people.

Six hours after the invasion began, Hamas militants were still fighting gunbattles inside several Israeli communities in a surprising show of strength that shook the country.

Social media was replete with videos of Hamas fighters parading what appeared to be stolen Israeli military vehicles through the streets and at least one dead Israeli soldier within Gaza being dragged and trampled by an angry crowd of Palestinians shouting “God is Great.”

Israel declares war on Hamas after Palestinian militants infiltrate from Gaza, Netanyahu confirms

Israel took their eye off the ball over the last couple of years. This is the bill for that misjudgment.

Honestly, when are they not at war?

It's tragic that this just goes on decade after decade.

I am no Hamas sympathizer, but both sides bear blame. Conflict is built into their DNA it seems.

As I recall, years ago Israel offered the Palestinians almost everything they wanted for agreement on a separate Palestinian state. But at the eleventh hour Palestinian leader Yassir Arafat rejected the deal, probably because it would mean an end to his stealing of millions of dollars from foreign aid money for the Palestinians. I forget how many millions he was said to have in foreign accounts at the time of his death.

Israel built a strong nation albeit with unfair policies against Palestinians.

The Arabs created a martyr state of despair.

Biggest intelligence failure in the history of Israel. Very surprising considering that at least up until now Mossad has been considered among the best if the not the best intelligence service in the world. While this attack has been compared with the 1973 Yom Kippur the current attack was much more of an intelligence failure. Israel actually saw the 1973 Yom Kippur war coming, the failure 50 years ago was a catastrophic miscalculation with Israel believing at the time that it could repel an invasion from Egypt in short order. The current attack was apparently a complete surprise.

The question is, will another Arab country step in to help out Palestine?

Gaza was given back little over 15 years ago in a naive effort to promote peace. This seems to be a really large and widespread attack. 2000+ rockets in 24 hours is Quite the escalation. Has potential to escalate quickly. Once this initial attack is quelled you can expect Israel to launch a large counter.

same people we just gave 6 billion. They don’t just fund hamas. Hamas leadership doesn’t take a dump without Iranian authorization. Optics are horrendous here.

The day is coming when we humans will have to migrate to another planet. Then, of course, we'll have to wipe out all the Indians who are there.

I had heard it was actually in the range of 5000 rockets in 24 hours. More than the dome can handle. Obviously Hamas cannot keep that pace up, unless they have some additional outside assistance..
