Do you think Mertz is playing well?

Wylie Ritch was a better center than Kingsley is. Donnie Young was a better guard than any we currently have. My bad on the shotgun as I forgot he installed it before the SEC Championship. However, he didn't make any adjustments in the fsu game the week preceding to save Danny a beating.

 

Its the run and shoot out of a bunch formation. When we can't run, we can't shoot and we aren't doing that style any favors by not spreading out the field. The only UF QB I can remember that finished the season with over a 70% completion percentage was Wayne Peace, and that was the exact offense UF ran back in the early 80's

 

I don't think Wylie Ritch was all that, but Donnie Young was one of the best Olinemen to play at UF (He played both G and T out of necessity).

 

Didn't say Wylie was, but I think he was better than Kingsley. Agree 100% on Donnie.

 

Unfortunately they have given me a lot to criticize

 

He was playing the backup center, which affects continuity big time. That has an effect on your OL and ability to add wrinkles. Spurrier was stubborn, but he would make changes when needed.

 

I'm on board with Shane, we should spread it out and let Mertz toss the rock. If we lose we lose, but at least go down swinging.

 

Perhaps the main reason his completion percentage is off the charts is because our screen passing is by far the most successful component of our passing game.

 

I think Mertz should throw more intermediate and long balls downfield… just to keep the LB&S home.

We all know that Mertz isn't a all caliber QB, but he hasn't be given tool to work with and the play calling has been pathetic.

 

Mertz has really impressed me as a player, student of the game and as a person. He’s a winner off the field the way he carries himself. I’m hoping it will translate to wins on the field.

 

I’m pretty sure that Bud the analytics guy, on Stadium and Gale, said that we’ve been awful in the spread, that we literally lose expected points every time we run a play out of the spread.

 

That was non-pistol formation, so they could absolutely spread and then have RB behind Mertz in a pistol formation, which now is our most productive offense in that same statistical analysis. The cause IMO, and I believe Bud also alluded to it, is that we are close to 2/3 predictable run/pass just based on if the RB is behind Mertz or next to/split out. 0 plays with 10 personnel, so whether or not spreading with 4 WR would be effective is completely unknown due to no data. The reason I'm on board with it is because it is different, may as well try anything different because our offense reminds me of the movie Idiocracy right now.

 

Will Miles said his adjusted completion percentage is like 55% because of how short the throws are. Now, whether or not adjusted completion is worth any consideration or has merit is another discussion and probably different person to person.

Generally, I would much rather his completion percentage drop 10-15 points in exchange for an extra 5 yards/attempt.

 

It can be the preferred method but there has to be an alternative for exactly these type of games. It’s going to happen to every team and there has to be better playcalling the next time we need multiple scores quickly.

 

Just imagine if Graham had Kyle Pitts to throw to.......
