I guess it's hard for people to admit they were duped, especially if they consider themselves intelligent and thoughtful. So the fact that election theft claim after claim is either unproven or completely debunked is a hard pill to swallow. And the thing is, the only reason they really believed this stuff in the first place is because Trump said it. Trump, a guy with an endless list of lies and falsehoods, said it. That's it. And that's hard for me to fathom.
He started that "rigged" nonsense before Iowa in 2016, claiming if he lost the Iowa caucuses they were rigged. Nothing has changed.
I think it goes to a deeper level of cognitive dissonance avoidance. These people claim to love America and consider that part of their identity. That is all in theory. They actually don't really like most Americans that much, especially when those Americans largely reject their political beliefs. That, through the prism of political partisanship, has also become part of their identity. So how to square those two conflicting thoughts? Well, clearly it was some shadowy group that did it! They really do like most Americans, it is just that the shadowy group that they are up against stole it from them! So much easier to believe.
