Do you think Mertz is playing well?

Discussion in 'RayGator's Swamp Gas' started by uf1998, Oct 1, 2023.

  1. I'm lukewarm on Mertz... I agree that the OL has been poor and hasn't been given time to do much but in the times that he's had time, he doesn't go through his progressions and misses wide open receivers. I'm all for efficency as long as we are attacking a defense and pushing the ball down the field as opposed to always taking what the defense gives you; that's playing not to lose and most of the time, that results in copious amounts of losses. I also don't like his predictability I.E. ALWAYS rolling right... It's too easy for a defense to key in on and essentially cut the field in half.... Just like Jesse Palmer said "they're making it alot more difficult on themselves than they have to."
The ONE play he did go against the grain and rolled left, it went for a 30 yard gain.

Its the obvious way to defend UF...I have no idea what UT was thinking going light in the box for an entire half. Its going to be doubly tough going forward because now we have two of our top WR's out with injury.

OL is a key suspect too.

Last year's OL was one of the better units UF has had in the last decade and half.

No...Danny could throw it in a WR's watch pocket on a timing pass play where he let the ball go before the WR even made his cut. Mertz doesn't have near DW's accuracy, although I agree with most on here that he is the least of our offensive problems.

When you can turn around and hand the ball off for 300+ and your defense is playing well there is no need to throw much.

  8. The blueprint to beat Florida for the next 3 years is out:

Score 14-17 points in the 1st quarter and cruise the rest of the game.

Well, you won’t be getting a player and coach overhaul anytime soon, so you better hope something else happens

This style of Offense does make it very difficult to catch up if you get down by a couple of scores. It was pretty obvious when UF was uselessly running into a stacked box down by 16 in the 1st quarter that the game was essentially over.

I already can guess what’s going to eventually happen. I’ve seen this movie before and know how it ends

Expecting the OL to consistently block a 6-8 man box isn’t going to happen too often. Does the offense call plays designed to slow down the opposing pass rush? There are ways to help out the OL with play calling. Throw slants, spread the field to widen out the defense, don’t play action on 3rd and 10+, don’t run up the middle into a 9 man box. Our offensive scheme and playcalling doesn’t do the OL much favors.

Probably should turn off the 1/2assU game and tune in to the Orange and Blue once in a while then.

Spurrier didn't adjust against fsu in the regular season game in '96. Took him four weeks to make the adjustment needed to beat the noles for the NC, and he had a much better OL to work with.

I’m a college football fan and I have a normal attention span, so I’m mentally capable of watching more than one game every Saturday.

Nor does he have DW's offensive line protecting him, or Ike, Reidel, and Quezzie with Taylor at RB.

He also lost his starting center the game before against Vandy, which probably played a role in how things turned out. He also put Wuerffel into the shotgun in SEC championship game the following week, which allowed him enough time to get that deep TD pass off that basically sealed that ball game.

Some of the issues we are seeing this year were also present last year, and having a weaker OL doesn’t help. I haven’t seen much in the way of adjustments to the offensive scheme. I see a stubbornness that concerns me.
