Chris Rufo, white authoritarianism and a guy who wants to be 'warlord'

Rufo has apparently been a really influential person on the right. He's been described as the main guy who created the rightwing panic over CRT. He's pushed the idea that acknowledgement of LGBTQ in public schools is about grooming children. He's had DeSantis' ear and was named to the board of trustees at New College.
He recently hosted a discussion on X, and one of the participants was Charles Haywood, who made lots of money in shampoo, founded a rightwing men-only group and has talked about wanting to be a 'warlord' after the coming collapse of the United States.

Early in the Rufo-hosted discussion last Tuesday, Haywood raised the hypothetical possibility early in the discussion: “Let’s say a real white nationalist arose who had real political power … and therefore [could] be of assistance against the left.”

Responding to the hypothetical, Haywood said: “I think that the answer is that you should cooperate with that person in order to destroy the power of the left.”

Later in the broadcast, Haywood responded to concerns about rightwing authoritarianism by saying: “When we’re talking about people like Franco or Pinochet or even Salazar … they did kill people. They killed people justly, they killed people unjustly, and that’s just a historical fact.”

“But,” Haywood added, “they saved a lot more people than they killed.”

‘No enemies to the right’: DeSantis ally hosts debate hedging white nationalism

As far as Haywood, the would-be warlord:

One idea he has repeatedly raised on the website is that he might serve as a “warlord” at the head of an “armed patronage network” or “APN”, defined as an “organizing device in conditions where central authority has broken down” in which the warlord’s responsibility is “the short- and long-term protection, military and otherwise, of those who recognize his authority and act, in part, at his behest”.

The “possibilities involving violence” that APNs might face, Haywood writes include “more-or-less open warfare with the federal government, or some subset or remnant of it”.

Further on, Haywood writes: “At this moment I preside over what amounts to a extended, quite sizeable, compound, which when complete I like to say, accurately, will be impervious to anything but direct organized military attack”, adding that “it requires a group of men to make it work … what I call ‘shooters’ – say fifteen able-bodied, and adequately trained, men.”

These “shooters”, Haywood explains, “can operate my compound, both defensively and administratively”, meanwhile, “I have the personality, and skills, to lead such a group.”

He was the brains behind the DeSantis plan to attack "woke". E developed the strategy. He was the first person to go on Fox and mention the letters CRT. Once he did that it went viral and spread across the right wing sphere

Rufo is just the coffee boy. Never heard of him. Just like they’ve never heard of QANON or the Proud Boys. That isn’t any more credible when you see posters claim to be unaware of those groups.

I guess if you pretend these obviously influential people don’t exist, while peddling their trash, that’s part of “no enemies to the right”.

Just evil and not remotely accurate. I'm reading my third or fourth book now on the Spanish Civil War. It just reminds me of how much that reality matches the fantasy of so many modern American right wingers. Though there were atrocities on both sides, when the Nationalists took territory, they would routinely go into the towns , round up the leftists, rape the women and kill the men.

The Trumpists have many historical antecedents. I would have said it couldn't happen here but I'm no longer certain.
