The defense has been such a huge disappointment

Misses the open man a lot. I don’t know if he doesn’t get off his first read or he just sees the rush and nothing else.

Why does every team but us know to run a quick play to avoid a review

I take back everything I said about defense in the Mullen era.

    I’d much rather lose 51-45 than 30-14

Are they reviewing something while we're at commercial? Like whether Mertz was down?

That’s what James on GNFP refers to as “hard mode.” Spectacular individual effort after missing WR wide open over the middle.

I really don’t think as a coach you come back from this kind of of second season product on the field in a way that will ever meet the expectations of a fanbase of a program that assumes it will be in the hunt for national championships. It’s not losing this game, it’s the overall lassitude and seeming obliviousness that inures into a self-perpetuating identity. Beating one or two teams you’re not supposed to each season obviously doesn’t cut it. This team is painful to watch the majority of the time, and there’s a defiant stubbornness when it comes to play calling, player selection and overall approach that often marks a death spiral in these situations. There’s no excuse for not having a special teams coach. There’s no logical reason Etienne isn’t getting the majority of handoffs. There’s no reason for a team with the ratio of blue-chip recruits this one has to look so hapless against a team with as many two and three stars as Kentucky fields. You can argue different sides of any one of those issues or myriad others that are readily apparent, but you can’t rationalize away the totality of them. It’s not just one game. That happens, especially to a coach rebuilding. But I don’t see a scheme or philosophy that signals a bright future. I see a (substandard) analog product in a digital world. Sure, maybe you can give him five seasons and we can be a middling SEC program like Kentucky that wins 8 or 9 games, but anyone looking at this and thinking we’re going to be competing for national championships in a couple of years is delusional. The chances of our current recruiting class holding is questionable after this, but regardless of that this just isn’t well-coached football. All the five-stars in the world isn’t going to change that.
