Target closing a bunch of stores in cities where crime is rampant. Will some of these cities finally do something about the crime? Target says it will close nine stores in major cities across four states because of theft and organized crime | CNN Business Target is closing nine stores in major cities across four states, claiming theft and organized retail crime have made the environment unsafe for staff and customers – and unsustainable for business. The big box chain is part of a wave of retailers – both large and small – that say they’re struggling to contain store crimes that have hurt their bottom lines. Many have closed stores or made changes to merchandise and layouts.
From the article: Can anyone provide concrete detail on the accuracy of this claim? On its face, that sounds like a misguided policy.
This story was on the news this morning. They had people walking through Target with many products locked behind glass doors. Not just razor blades and video games. It was toothpaste, shampoo and laundry detergent. Ridiculous.

Are we back to border is a ‘manufactured crisis’? that inflation isn’t as bad as ‘you think it is’ and that crime really is down and just because you don’t ‘feel’ safe doesn’t mean there is more crime ? I say that because I do not need a police report to know buckhead in atlanta is no longer a place I will take my family for dinner. Also don’t need a CPI report to know I’m paying double. Not 3% more. Double for a lot of goods whether it’s car insurance. Home insurance. Lysol, deli sandwich, etc
I have a Fox/Newsmax watching family member who swears this is true. I never bothered to fact check it, but it did sound strange to me.
Why are our tax dollars being used to subsidize these private business from hiring security and making stores more theft proof? Why do I have to pay for them to run their business? Police should be protecting and serving the taxpayers (yes, includes corporations… but come on). hot take: hire some people instead of your stupid self check out lines.
It's unclear from the article whether the police made the part of the claim that I underlined, or if the journalist provided that detail on their own. At a minimum, the journalist didn't cite or confirm that specific part of the claim, which is lazy reporting, IMO. That's a pretty substantial and even outlandish claim without proof to back it up.
The border is a good example since you brought it up, its probably one of the most policed and secured borders in the world with untold billions spent on doing that and yet people portray it as a free for all for political purposes. Target is closing stores, its pretty easy of them to blame retail theft because it suits their agenda and takes them off the hook for their own failures and bad policies. Inflation is another great example, anyone can raise their prices right now and blame inflation!
Probably because then the companies will be sued over stopping the shop lifters. How about we convict people of stealing? I know, crazy idea.
In store security is basically useless. They are instructed not to touch shoplifters for fear of litigation. It's a crime on the rise because it's nearly impossible to get caught and the penalties are minor if you do.
They could just hire more people period. When I go to CVS there is maybe one person working checkout at any given time that isn't in the pharmacy section.
