As this is Mertz's first year in the offense I'm looking forward to him only getting better.

Wait . . . aren't they actually the same age but Mertz has only 1/3 the same experience in Coach Napier's offense? LOL! :)

I mean AR had only thrown 66 career passes before being thrust into the starting QB role in Napiers offense, as opposed to Mertz who had thrown 800+ career passes before taking over. I would sincerely hope that the guy with 800+ passes looks better, more comfortable and makes the correct reads and throws than the guy with 66 passes.:)

That being said, glad Mertz has been a pleasant surprise thus far!

Russell was pretty good but Russell Wilson transferred there as a senior, there was no development, no scouting out of HS. And even if you count those other two as succesfull that's 3 and like I said you could count them on one hand and still have fingers left over.

Right but that is exactly why it was so perplexing why people were so down about replacing AR with Mertz considering they had similar stats the previous year but Mertz had a shit ton of starting experience at a P5 school, so you may have thought that way but it's clear a TON people on here were bashing Billy for his off season aquisition of Mertz. We went from having one of the leat experienced QBs to one of the Most experienced QB's

It’s just a discussion I’m not gonna die on that hill. It’s all yours plant your flag.

*** remember, Nick Evers? He went to Oklahoma? Now he is at Wisconsin toiling in obscurity

As I have said many times before, I would rather have a qb who's an athlete than vice versa.

Listen to Mertz in the latest PC. Any PC really. He says all the right things. Gushes even and is genuine.

I don't remember ever having a Gators QB so thankful and eloquent.

If he keeps up the solid play we hit a home run with Mertz.

I think BN has tailored the offense around what Mertz (and OL) does well right now. Get the ball out quick and running game. I hope we see Mertz throw downfield from pocket more, but I may have to resign myself that there's a reason BN is uncomfortable opening up the offense. The offense, whether it be Mertz or his protection, may simply be inconsistent right now in that regard. That's too bad because I am beginning to think this WR corps is very talented.

The most interesting thing to me out of that article was that BN recognizes some of the plays were poorly designed. "If you charted the incompletions, some of those are bad design and some of those are drops — or maybe he’s throwing it away because of the rush." That tells me he is not as stubborn as people may seem to think. It may be talk, but that's a statement I'd expect from someone looking to continue to learn and adapt. I guess we'll see...

If we can develop better than average protection and give him time we'll see a bigger playbook and Mertz carving.

I was glad we got Mertz
I thought he would be a top 3 QB in SEC still think that.
We have talent at WR just need to give him a shade more time.

You can do this with any quarterback. Don’t fall for it.

All QBs miss on the perfect play. Mertz is more than serviceable. He’s a 2006 Chris Leak and can win with a supporting cast. Can he win by himself? Hell no.

It's ridiculous and needs to stop. As if anything less than Trask at his peak performance is unacceptable. Even if we were undefeated.

I just don’t see all the hate on Mertz folks are talking about. Was he the “home run “ people were hoping for, no. Is his play above average, absolutely.
I agree with the statement that all QBs miss stuff, and most of the frustration I see out there is more sideways vs down field quick passes. But that is not on Mertz.
But I never liked all the WR and bubble screens, unless you have Percy of course.
