Why Israel’s Border Fence Worked

Between the years 2007-2012, approximately 61,000 illegal immigrants entered Israel through the Egyptian border, the overwhelming majority coming from Eritrea and Sudan. The border fence was completed in December 2012 and the numbers of illegal immigrants dropped from 10,431 in 2012 to less than 150 in 2013. Furthermore, illegal immigrants entering between 2013-2016 were consistently lower than 150, only with a slight rise in 2015 to 232.

I don't think I have my head stuck in the sand. I'm just not inclined to rely upon a group that wants to slash legal immigration, is complaining about American children being given an education (presumably we should factor in how much those kids will add to the economy and tax base going forward), and might even be tied to White Nationalists. I'm not arguing for the status quo either. I think we need comprehensive reform, which would probably include the following: expanding and improving guest worker programs, continued support for legal immigration (maybe more of that), re-thinking our failed War on Drugs, and helping to improve the conditions in the countries from where migrants are risking their lives to come here.

 

Israel's Internal Security force (who put out that report) is opposed to the wall? They were the ones that didn't view it as a significant cause.

So the claim is that illegal immigrants weren't deterred by the wall in 2011-2012, despite there having been a wall each of those years on the Egyptian border, but rather waited 3 years to be deterred? Coincidentally, they waited until after a change in government in Egypt that made it harder to get there. But that is just coincidence. It was the wall, which existed during the highest immigration years that caused it.

 

OK. So do you believe we have an illegal immigration problem? If so what do you think should be done?
