The Worst Teammates in NFL History

If Tebow truly was a poison to the Broncos, they wouldn't have gone to the playoffs (the year after a, what, 3-win season?) and beaten Pittsburgh. He did what it took to win games. Very unconventional, certainly. Required an OC that could call plays for him, and coaches that could let him drift from the script. No doubt. But he found ways to win. I don't know if the speaking gigs were indications of greed or not--I guess it depends on what he did with the money (did he donate it to the Philippines, for example?).

Color me skeptical. That’s from Elway’s bio. We know Elway hated him from when he took over. We know Tim was limited as a player and had an overzealous fan base which had to grate on teammates. That’s all undeniable and would have caused resentment regardless.

The only additional “fact” in there is that he charged $50,000 for charity event appearances, which I have never seen reported anywhere else. Just the opposite. In fact, during the season, charity appearances are compensated (much lower) and are organized by the team as part of CBA.

That doesn’t sound right. There may be other facts.

 

Decided to google. He did charge that back then for speaking events and corporate stuff and endorsements. Appears to be standard though that still seems a bit excessive to me

Tim has leveraged himself into his own cottage industry for sure. Books, juices, clothing, jewelry, etc. He’s quite the capitalist and good for him.

I wonder how many people actually read his first book? He is dyslexic and that explains his inability to quickly read defenses at the NFL level. No shame in that and it appears that he’s done okay for himself.

 

I don't know if dyslexia explains the inability to read NFL defenses. I think plenty of NFL quarterbacks have overcome that. But he may have a special situation. Then again, there is absolutely no shame in failing to be an NFL success, especially a quarterback. More than half of first rounders do not work out. He has nothing to explain or be ashamed about in that regard.

I do find the extent of the "business" slightly distasteful, but that may just be a matter of personal taste. I still think he's about the most exciting football players I've ever watched, and generally a good guy whose teammates here immensely respected him

 

Dyslexia is a processing disorder. It takes more time to put things “in the right order.” The NFL game is MUCH faster than college and the athletes are much better across the board.

 

I know you know more than I do about it. I'm not disputing that. I'm just not sure that it impacts the ability to read NFL defense is, though of course it could. I base that on the fact that I believe other NFL quarterbacks have been successful with some species of dyslexia although it may be a different form, which I acknowledge.

My major point was that there is no shame in not making it as an NFL quarterback despite being a first round draft pick. No need to explain that. It doesn't suggest any failure of character or work ethic

At worst it’s maybe slightly hypocritical for an outspoken Christian to go around doing “paid speaking events” - that gets you into some of the prosperity gospel types. But in reality it’s not even all that hypocritical, since his draw is more as a former Heisman QB. Athletes and politicians chase paid speaking engagements on the side all the time.

Anytime I see someone criticizing a celebrity for doing an ad I say “so you’d turn down a big paycheck for doing a few hours of work?”. The only time I even question it is when i see them peddling something really shady or fraudulent. Then I wonder what made them stoop to that level (like how much did you need that paycheck).

Most people don’t feel the need to announce it to the world 24/7. For instance I’m a terrific person. Really outstanding. Have I ever announced it to the board before? No! But now you know I’ll try not to mention it again.

You brought up his not apologizing for being a good person. I assume you think it’s closely connected to his Christian faith.

 

What is he supposed to hide his faith behind closed doors?

1. I thought this was America.
2. America would be better off if more people like him didn't hide their faith behind closed doors. Our culture is so ass backwards, that twerking at the Grammy's is empowering and true to oneself and should be celebrated, but actual virtue should be shunned and private.

I think it's a similar phenomena to what we see when women say Lizzo is beautiful. They don't mean it, they just say it because it makes them feel better about themselves. Don't believe me? Tell the same girls who say Lizzo is beautiful that they look like Lizzo and see how they react.

Tebow does the opposite. Although he should inspire people to be better, he makes a whole lot of people feel worse about themselves, so they don't like him. Not because he shames them or anything like that, simply because he leads an open virtuous life.
