And his cute calls at the end cost Clemson the game (along with that scoop and score). Dedicated OCs aren't immune to baffling decisions. Though I do think the passing game needs work
That’s the thing. Last year, we had no issues with the deep ball in Billy’s offense or play calling as it was what AR did well. This year we have no issues with completing a high percentage of passes dinking and dunking as it’s what Mertz excels at. So the offense is there to take shots. We just aren’t converting in the red zone at a high enough clip currently.
Several times in the post game presser Billy referenced analytics. I believe the entire offense is likely built around it. Any who, he was asked about several 4th down calls and why he opted to instead kick fg’s, the analytics said to do that. So, about the scared $$$ don’t make $$$ thing. Don’t you sometimes have to make calls from feel and the message it potentially sends to your team? He said it was more important to be up by 15 at that point instead of 12. I respectfully disagree, thought he should’ve got his offense to bow up and get a yard or three. I really don’t want to use the word weak, but yes, I thought it was.
If our defense wasn't playing well this year, then yes, have to score TDs. But did you ever think at anytime during the game that Charlotte was going to win, because I didn't?
..but Billy apparently did, hence why he thought it was more important to be up 15 vs 12. No, at no point did I think they were possibly going to win the game. It was ugly though.
Ummm I had concerns and issues with the play calling all year last year. Billy doesn’t seem to have a feel for the rhythm of the game. Same thing happened last year. We don’t have an explosive offense. We don’t have margins for mistakes. And Billy doesn’t t have that innate playcalling feel that all the greats have. ( see apurrier).
The fact that he is "analytical" by this time one would think we'd see some corrections. Could it be his style of O, runs and short passes don't work all that well when the field is condensed. I'm not sure his passing attack scheme is innovative enough otherwise I'd think by now we'd see improvement. Further more if you don't have a duel threat qb, it would seem scoring TDs becomes harder.
His playcalling was terrible.. but that aside, it still allows the HBC to make a decision to keep or fire him, allows the HBC to focus on being the CEO of the program. Build the entire program up.
You truly think that? I don't think he thought at any time they were going to win. He just knows how difficult it would be for Charlotte to make two 2 pt conversions which is what they would've had to do to win. If we go for it and didn't get it, then they wouldn't have had to go for something that's difficult to achieve.
Last year’s offense was pretty explosive with AR. I’ll give you that Billy hasn’t shown a feel for playcalling yet. I guess when it works, it’s great and we haven’t seen it work as much as far as big plays go.
Using analytics is much like using Game Theory Optimal in poker. Sometimes you have to make a decision based on what's happening at the time instead of theory. However, if our defense wasn't playing well, then the decision might've been better to go for it.
I keep hearing he runs a Kyle Shanahan offense, so the offense does work. I also hear that we need the players especially on the OL and at TE to run it effectively. That is a work in progress.
And we were down three starting OL and the TE play hasn't been stellar this year. Although they seem to be working them in more over the last couple of weeks.
That goes inline with Billy not having a feel for play calling if analytics drive his decisions instead of football sense. I’d go for it and trust that our defense wouldn’t give up that long drive. Now last year, he would go for it quite a bit in our own territory and I’m sure that was based on analytics too. Js
