Young Floridians are reportedly leaving as the State became the area “where empathy, decency, and kindness go to die” (msn.com)

With younger generations leaving, it comes as no surprise that Universities in Florida are suffering. The University of Florida alone lost over 1000 staffers, reports claim.

Rubin addressed the issue, “Record numbers of faculty are not returning to the University of Central Florida, Florida State University, and the University of South Florida. This is hardly surprising, given DeSantis’s assault on academic independence and his suggestion that students go out of state if they want to study topics such as African American studies.”

anybody know if this claim re: UF is true?

We need roofers and field workers to replace the immigrants DeSantis ran off.

Jason Garcia shows how the DeSantis administration tried to lure Remington Arms to Fort Pierce with at least $25 million but lost out to Georgia because, at least according to what the CEO claimed, concerns about the quality of Florida’s workforce.

Ron DeSantis tried to give $25 million to a gun company

    Kinda on topic:
The Orlando Sentinel ran an op Ed the other day from a physics professor at FSU making a point that kids (even college bound) aren’t taking rigorous math or science classes in HS.

Something he didn’t address is that there is a serious shortage of teachers that can teach those courses and it’s getting worse every year. If you want more STEM students and the careers that go with it you need someone to teach those preparatory classes.

Vouchers aren’t going to address the problem

I've noticed a rise in the number of Florida schools offering Physics as a freshman class rather than for juniors and seniors. Didn't make any sense the first few times I saw it, freshmen don't know enough math to do Physics, they need at least Algebra II. I ran into someone teaching the class to freshmen and got to ask them about it. To make it a freshman class, they cut out all the math and turn it into a vocab version of the class. Makes the parents feel good, but doesn't serve the students well.

Oh, don't worry we will get more STEM students.......MBA programs are being classified as STEM. Yes, you read that right. :(

Hard sell to take rigorous math classes and then basically donate your time to teaching vs getting 6 figures of salary analyzing data or building models.

Nothing wrong with having targeted MBA programs geared towards STEM fields

There is so much wrong. they aren't geared toward STEM fields, they're saying look a fraction this needs to be STEM. It's terrible.

My wife & I have taught in MBA programs for 25 years including a current 1 that is horrifyingly designated as STEM. Find a link to 1 that is STEM worthy & share it.

I had a guy who's undergrad was in Creative Writing at a Buddhist institute. Real STEMy

Good for you. Maybe change is what you’re against?
Harvard and other top institutions incorporate STEM into an MBA program shouldn’t threaten a traditional MBA.

incorporating it into the program and declaring all participants to be in STEM studies are two different htings though. adding all MBA students into a pot that are referred to as STEM students is disingenuous at best

I'm only able to provide anecdotal evidence. I have a friend that was a researcher at UF for years and has found a new position out of state. He said the politics have gotten to be too much and that both left and right leaning professors and researchers are looking to leave. Another major reason for them wanting to leave is the 5-year tenure reassessment
