***I realize this is a fantasy scenario and hey, what do we think of when we fantasize? Anything we want. Anything? Anything. So I don’t want to be hearing about what the guys should be thinking about, team chemistry blah blah, this is purely an act of fun for ourselves, a fantasy. So say this team wins out. Obviously this is where the fantasy comes in. If that happens some player (and probably another) would have to be real close to being wwwaaayyy better than we can imagine. They would have to be so good that they would be a Heisman contender. I would say it’s a must. We currently have none but again, if we fantasize we have some that could turn into one. I feel like I am leaving the defense alone here but that’s the nature of the Heisman usually does. There are one or two guys that could have a breakout season still but if one is on his way IMO it’s TE, or as I call him ET, Travis Etienne! I said he could be a Heisman contender one day last year and after last week, i really think he could. He has one Heisman week and one Heisman play under his belt as of last week. If we continue to pull off upsets, soon they won’t be upsets and the reason (one of them will be him). Of course his supporting cast will have to help but to take an SEC Championship he’s gonna have to keep doing what he did. Mertz is going to have to support him with that accurate arm of his. He doesn’t need to play lights out. He throws good enough that they have to respect the secondary and ET runs good enough that they have to respect run (and Mertz and out other boys) and opposing teams will have to really game to pick us apart should this fantasy come to fruition. So to conclude, if we are going to have a Heisman contender this year, and mind you I’m not calling it, but if we do, it’s ET. We need the rest of the team to do their jobs and ET to do his and some others. Hey it could happen. As Billy Joel said “It’s just a fantasy, it’s not the real thing. Sometimes a fantasy is all you need”. Who say you?
Etienne? Mertz would have to turn into Burrow overnight just to be considered, and we don't have the kind of offense conducive to generating the type of numbers he needs to be in that conversation.
My brain can’t even function around Heisman right now. I usually think in terms of All-American or All-SEC, throughout the season. I think Cam Jackson, Shemar and maybe Trevor as 1st team all SEC. Scooby, Pearsall, Castell… 2nd team. If the media had to pick today, that’s a reasonable look at it.
We had, what, 3 players in the preseason All SEC teams? I think we'll end up outpacing that when the season is over, which would be cool.
Cmon, lighten up Skink. I was sitting here thinking as I sometimes do, can we win out? After Tenn and thinking we should have handled Utah, I thought what would it take and said to myself “self, in order to win we would need someone to step up to Heisman like status, and who would that be”. I thought what I wrote and then was just curious who would anyone else think it would be in that scenario. I figured a lot of people would say Mertz but at this point I just don’t see that happening. If ET can keep doing what he did, HUUGGEEE if, often, then it would be him. Also, it gives me my bring back he’s a genius thread should I be right.
Anyway the answer is Etienne, that boy is a playmaker and a threat to score every time he touches the ball.
If we go far, it’ll be because of our defense like in 2006. Take a look at the Heisman voting that year. Not a Gator in sight.
As I said, it would need a world bearing performance from them but when there is a rare occasion of a contender on the D line, he must have serious expectations and then more then lift up to them. Otherwise I agree a monumental performance from the D would need to continue but an offensive guy would get the ratings this year. D needs to hit the ground running and live up like a Kearse or a Brown. Crazy as it may be, ET is already getting comparisons to Smith and Harvin and he juked the whole team last week on that 74 yard run but it would definitely take on a stellar D.
