AVR - a solution whose time has arrived

I've heard this argument before - essentially, that it shouldn't be too convenient to vote because if it is, then many people will vote who wouldn't vote if it were inconvenient. If that's true, it would seem to logically follow that we should strive to make voting quite difficult if we want only the most "qualified" and motivated people voting. (Slightly different issue, but I suspect this is a key reason why Vivek is saying people should have to pass exams before they can vote, although that has a partisan kicker since it singles out young people for the new requirement).

In terms of mail-in voting, I could see resistance to it if there's actual evidence that it result in more abuse or fraud. I haven't seen that argued. In fact, the State of Florida has consistently said that our elections are very secure and accurate despite the mail-in ballots allowed. If accuracy isn't a problem, I don't agree with making it harder to vote (or register) just for the sake of it.

 

You can do practically anything from the comfort of your home including the submission of various legal documents and tax information. I can't remember the last time I stepped foot inside of a polling place. Why the heck would I vote in person when I can just throw it in the mailbox?

 

Thats just it. There are no hoops to jump through. So I want those who care enough to vote to vote. I do not want the dem and pub machines to vote for people by driving to their house and offering a Cheeseburger to handle it for them.

 

No. It is not about making it difficult. Having one day with the polls open 24 hours is easy. Simple. And the best way to make sure the vote is legitimate.

 

I have been against early voting from the beginning and I understand some want it. We have always had absentee voting for those who cannot make it to the polls. That is the way we should be doing it. That said. I would make it 24 hours instead of 7 to 7 like in the past or 7 to 9 (whichever it has been). Midnight to midnight to give everyone the full opportunity.

Mail in for no reason is ripe for buying votes by the machine of each party.

 

Again this is your own made up standard, grounded only in your head. You have no idea how much people care or not.

 

Love early voting. I'm working ~8am-6pm most days and don't want to have to wait in line before/after work or hope I can squeeze in my vote at lunch. Why should I have to waste x amount of time to prove I really want to vote?

Unless there's any real proof of fraud we should keep doing things to make it easier for people to vote, not harder.

 

People voting who don’t care enough to vote? Huh?

 

Yes. People who would never vote get nice pub or dem at the door with a gift card to take care of it for them. I want everyone to vote in a secure way. Midnight to midnight. Call it a holiday. Sure many businesses will be open. Absentee by providing two pieces of identification to receive if you know you can’t vote in person over a 24 hour stretch.

That is my opinion of the optimal way to have our election.

 

Maybe if we had people pay a poll tax we could really see who cares about voting? Adding hurdles to voting is illegal and anti-democracy. Why are you for that?

I never said anything about a poll tax. I want secure elections for everyone so they know their vote counts. We all show up one day and make it happen. Stop making up BS…

 

If I can buy or sell a house virtually I don’t see why I can’t cast a vote by mail at my leisure.
