For clarification, was it fourth down with four seconds remaining when Mertz was dancing around ? And did Tenn have any timeouts remaining ?

So Mertz could have just taken a knee and the clock would have run out ?

I think if he immediately took a knee then UT gets the ball. Change of possession I think the clock still stops

Not that they could win, but....

No. That was a fourth down play. The clock would stop as soon as his knee hit the ground for change of possession. Mertz was trying to run as much of the 7 seconds off the clock as he could before he went down.

Regardless, Heupel set the stage when he pulled that stunt with the timeout. I'm not sure if he was trying to send a message to his team but if he was they didn't get it, at least not in a constructive manner.

No. Taking the knee would have stopped the clock and turned the ball over to Tennessee with time on the clock at our 35 because it was 4th down. Stop trying to prove you were right. You were wrong all along.

Stop trying to settle old scores. I was unaware that the clock would stop on fourth down. Sheesh.

It was stupid, if he wanted to give his team a prayer he calls that TO after 1st down and we have to punt with around 20-30 seconds left, instead he waited for 4th to call it when the players and coaches started to walk off the field, he called it to be a troll and hopefully stir up a fight, which is what happened.

Coach Heupel apologized and Coach Napier took the high road.

    Good optics for us.

For Coach Heupel & Tennessee...not so much......
