    That doesn’t really answer the question I asked. I’m asking, what did he say that would make someone think he not a Christian, because the points he is making seem to be supported by the Bible…. And there is, of course, a long history of Christians believing that mental illness and neurological diseases are demon possession, so he’s basically right in line with traditional Christian beliefs.

    Here’s an example, I mean, some of you may think that blaming mental illness on demon possession is a thing of the past, but here is a modern day organization called the Christian Medical Fellowship advising that doctors should be trained to recognize and diagnosis demon possession….

    Are there specific passages in the Bible that support this idea? I'm not saying you are wrong, but I am struggling to recall anything specifically.
    I have also heard other Christians that have said that mental illness is demon possession, so I'm not disagreeing that this has been believed by some. Really just asking about your claim that the Bible supports this claim.

    It’s impossible for me to come away from reading that book without concluding it’s a “goofy mess”. (I’ll have to remember that phrase!)

    A quick search shows some Biblical stories of people who’d be considered mentally Ill today being healed by Jesus casting out their demon…. One such story is a naked man who lived in a cemetery, cutting himself, and attacking others, but Jesus cast out his demon and he returned to normal….

    No where in those passages (same story occurs in Matthew, Mark, & Luke) does it say the man was mentally ill, but it specifically says that he was demon possessed. The story also says that it wasn't just one demon but many (the demons say they are Legion). I agree they likely would be considered mentally ill today, but your initial claim was that the Bible supports the idea that all mentally ill people are demon possessed. My interpretation would be that some mentally ill people could be demon possessed but I wouldn't go so far as to say all and make a blanket statement. As to how to distinguish between who would be and who wouldn't be, I couldn't tell you therefore I wouldn't sit around making generic accusations.

    Well 'mental illness' didn't even exist as a concept in its modern form until like the 17-18th century (i.e. the Enlightenment). It would be very strange if the Bible used the phrase "mentally ill" to describe anyone.

    Actually, there's a lot of overlap between the left and right wings over this issue. The far ends of the spectrum meet to form a big kumbaya circle of government overreach, Big Pharma conspiracies, helicopter parenting, etc.

    That is a valid point. And I do agree that our modern terminology would agree this man was mentally ill. I don't necessarily think we can jump to the conclusion that the Bible would promote that all mentally ill people are demon possessed.

    Since I don't believe in demons or demon possession, I think that Christians have a long history of falsely labelling people who are mentally ill as "demon possessed". I guess another way to put it is that medical science recognizing mental illness and has ways of treating it in many cases, whereas there is no scientific evidence that demons exist or that exorcisms work, so it's really not a "one-or-the-other, who knows" problem for me ... unless someone can prove demonic possession is real.

    That's probably fair, but to be extremely general, before our modern notions of sanity and clinical treatment, mental defects/abnormalities and such were considered maladies of the soul, which doesn't necessarily imply demonic possession, but I could see how people would arrive there in many cases, particularly if they were religious.
