FDA vaccine adviser says healthy under-75s don't need Covid booster Offit hasn’t lined up 100% with booster recommendations. The link above indicates that if you are under 75 and healthy, you probably don’t need it. I recall last fall he said he wasn’t going to take the booster in the fall, partly because he had recently got over Covid and didn’t think it was necessary. The case for additional boosters, beyond the first, for healthy individuals is mixed. 1. Everybody at this point has had some exposure to the vaccines or disease 2. Even though they reformulate the boosters, it doesn’t make much difference, because the human body tends to react the same way as to the initial exposure it experiences. 3. The antibody response, while greater than zero, is relatively short lived 4. The longer term T cell responses, a primary defense against severe illness, tend to be long term. I’m not sure there is evidence either way whether the boosters increase the T cells responses. This is in contrast to flu shots, where there is very little T cell responses, and thus annual flu shots annual antibody boost is the only defense available. I’m 60, comparatively healthy, but I’ll probably get the booster anyway, but I will likely wait a couple of months as I had Covid in July. My last booster was a year ago.
Well, I Googled Offit earlier, since I frankly knew nothing about him, and this is the info I found without doing an extensive search: Who should definitely get a COVID booster? If you're at high risk of severe disease from COVID, don't think twice, say doctors and infectious disease researchers. That includes people who are over 65 or those who have weakened immune systems or certain other medical conditions, such as chronic lung disease, obesity, advanced diabetes or kidney disease. Pregnant people should also get the shot, says Dr. Paul Offit, director of the Vaccine Education Center at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. "The goal really is to keep people out of the hospital," he says. https://www.npr.org/sections/health...03134/covid-boosters-updated-vaccines-fda-cdc
The article bounces around quoting different people. Offit didn’t say anything about 65 in the article. I don’t think he is against getting the vax if you are less than 75, but he believes the benefits are marginal. He’s a pretty old school evidenced based guy, and tends to think there should be good and clear evidence for significant vaccine effectiveness / benefit.
He does say the objective of the booster is to keep people out of the hospital. I stated earlier that staying out of the hospital is my objective. So Offit and I see eye to eye on that and I'm not even a doctor.
Dr Offit told DailyMail.com: 'I think we are best served by targeting these booster doses to those who are most at risk of severe disease (i.e. hospitalization). 'Specifically, those over 75 years of age, those who have health problems that put them at highest risk of severe disease (such as obesity, chronic lung disease, chronic heart disease and diabetes, among others) [and] those who are immune-compromised and those who are pregnant.' That said he isn’t against anybody who wants it getting it. As I said I will probably get it regardless.
I guess it depends on who you trust regarding the efficacy and the safety of this vaccine. Do you trust the vaccine peddlers and their ilk, or other more independent entities? Who do you trust with you health? Florida's surgeon general recommends those under 65 not get the newly updated COVID-19 shot Florida's surgeon general recommends those under 65 not get the newly updated COVID-19 sho
You ask who do we trust with our health, and you give us a link to Tiger Droppings? As for Florida's Surgeon General, he's a DeSantis political hack, chosen by our illustrious Mickey Mouse-hating governor because he was a vaccine skeptic to start with. Who gives a crap what he says?
I would never be such an azz... What I say here is not advice in any which way at all. It's just how I live my life. I did not take the original shot. and never will take the new one. I would rather take something for it after contracting it than try and use an experimental drug to prevent from getting it. For me it's the safest option.
You just can’t worry about stuff like that. At the height of pan-panic, if I went to the hospital for any ailment, tested positive on intake, and died from any cause in the hospital … my death certificate would have read - Covid.
One of the things I've learned reading during this pandemic is that vaccine skepticism seems to be a naturally occurring human impulse. There are versions of it throughout history and in every culture. Obviously, vaccines strike somewhere in the lizard brain that overcomes rationality. Also I am sympathetic, and then only slightly, to skeptics because of the fact that in the US it's become a culture war, a badge of identification. To my knowledge, we're the only major country in which so-called leaders actually promoted this irrational and harmful impulse. That said, with very limited exception to a few individuals, there is absolutely no logic or rationality behind not getting vaccinated whenever you can. Now that it's no longer completely free, there will be a limited number of individuals that can't afford it for one reason or another. That's obviously one thing. But those resisting because of skepticism, or because they've had enough, cannot defend their actions rationally. Larger culture war comes out of a desire to destroy the social fabric. DeSantis claims that Florida is standing up for truth, but in fact he is serving darkness and lies. He is certainly not serving anything good. It's sad, but it impacts us all. Even if someone was individually completely immune, if they had any sense of belonging to a larger society, they would get vaccinated both by way of example and because they can still be a carrier even if immune. But we no longer have any conception of a common good. Society is under attack from a concerted plurality that is seeking to destroy it, and as you seem vaccinations as an attack vector.
Just keep an open bottle of water in your hand or stay seated at your dining room table. If I learned anything the past few years it's that these things confuse viruses and render them unable to see you.
Yep. All the hospitalization fear nonsense right now is pure propaganda. As Dr. Fraiman said...the last patient he admitted for Covid was back in Feb of 2022 (omicron). He has admitted a lot of patients with Covid. But that is not the narrative to control the few left who cannot see reality.
