At least acknowledge the six sacks, the excessive procedural penalties that killed scoring opportunities and the missed FG played an outsized role in the EPA component for just that game.

At least half the sacks were attributable to pathetic blocking (1 on RB2 and 2 on a C starting his first game). There is no argument that we didnt play a clean game and the metrics speak to that but declaring the season a bust because we dont have a highly mobile QB is disingenuous

I use data, not emotions. The passing was not respectable vs Utah. It wasn’t bad. It was okay. That’s what the data says. Sorry I analyze football like it’s 2023 and not 1995. We have better metrics than completion percentage and yards.

And it’s not an insult to QUOTE THE DATA.

Exactly, it’s one real game. I’m in wait and see mode

I don’t expect our O to be better than 2022. But most people fail to realize we had a good offense in 2022.

Pass blocking is a part of the offense and the passing game.

I don’t care if we have a mobile QB. I care about total productivity. At its simplest it’s a basic addition equation. If we don’t run the ball as well (RBs or no QB runs) then the passing game has to improve to make up for it. As long as the total productivity is high I don’t care if we are 100% pass, 100% triple option, or anything else

Data doesn’t lie. EPAs and similars are what they are. Unlike others I won’t be delusional and think a good offense is bad or a bad offense is good. I rely on data. If we end up #1 I’ll say that or if we end up #120 I’ll say that. The data is what it is. Why are people afraid of data?

Back in tge 90’s, rushing almost always decided this game and I think it will this time also. We don’t need to have a higher total of rushing yards but we do need to be able to run somewhat to give Mertz time to work. Slow down their running game and make their qb throw for first downs and make them respect our running and Mertz will have much more opportunity to be successful getting some chunks.

I agree but I don’t think we need to out rush them, just be effective.

We were middle of the conference last year. I expect it to end up similar this year. The numbers will look much different but the results may not be much different. Hopefully our defense will make a huge jump. Top 50 would be a huge jump. We play a few decent to good defenses this year and that’s when it really matters. It’s nice when an offense can work against an average defense but some break down when they face a good defense.
Wow, Bamas offense looks like shit and I’m not even sure Texas’ defense is all that. Lil Nicky has his choice of players every year and that’s the qb he comes up with? That guy can’t throw at all. I love a running qb but passing will always be king. How does the best coach of alll time somehow believe you can win with a qb that can’t throw.

Data my butt — you’re fueled by emotion here.

I’m not impressed by anyone who selects only the data that support their narrative and ignores the rest. We’ve played 2 games and you only want to consider the data from one of them. Why? Because you don’t want Mertz to possibly look better than AR.

You can stop trying to make yourself out to be objective when it’s so obvious you’re anything but.

I like the positive trends in the McNeese game as much as anyone, brother, but I can also understand the viewpoint that piling up stats against one of the worst teams in college football can't really be trusted as a reliable indicator of our offensive prowess.

this Saturday is going to be a much better litmus for where we're at as a team, and I'm extremely hopeful that we send the Vols back home crying and gnashing their tooth.

Absolutely no argument man. What I’m pushing back against is taking data from the obvious Week 1 debacle in Utah as the sole indicator of our QB and offense, while intentionally ignoring all data from the next game — and then claiming to be data-driven. It’s easy for anybody to hand-select data points to support pretty much any narrative.

It’s far too early to be reading too much into either of those two games. The Tennessee game will be revealing - and hopefully enjoyable for us to watch.
