There is no rationalizing. The words “rooting” & “hoping”, to fail, were precisely used.

The negative energy towards AR is noticed by several posters. They can’t all be making it up and imagining things.

Claiming a Gator player didn’t try to win should be ban worthy. The mods seem to be ok with AR slander but get worked up if someone says a player performed poorly. We should NEVER question a players character unless you have rock solid proof. And what proof do they have? Absolutely zero.

I’m a Jaguars fan . I was hoping the Jags would rock the Colts . Didn’t really think about AR much except I wanted us to sack and pressure him.
Go Jags . When they UF I have no concern about what they do. Just another player.

I'm the opposite. When I was a kid, growing up in Gainesville, the only pro team in Florida was the Phins. I still don't have a favorite pro team, or even a lot of interest in pro football. I tend to watch a game if there is a former Gator playing...actually with so many former Gators in the league I can root for just about any team.

Interesting enough, now we’re seeing some of AR’s biggest supporters share their negative energy toward Mertz. Funny how that works isn’t it?

Nah. Haven't you heard. It's constructive criticism from them. It's only "hate" if it's about AR.

I routed for Chris Leak to be successful but that changes Matt and Coupes narrative that they like to tip toe around.

Had to block one of those because they aren't interested in dialogue. At least Matt talks football even if I disagree with some of his takes.

    Meh...I root for all Gators.

I was very impressed with Mertz in the McNeese game.

I also thought Max Brown looked good at QB last week and worry that he will transfer out if Lagway moves ahead of him next Spring.

Anthony Richardson’s Development Plan Is Ahead of Schedule

Crazy for this to be the case after how he usually looked at UF.

Interesting post Matt. I don’t think anybody here thinks AR “didn’t try to win”. That’s impossible to believe out of any player suited up in the orange & blue, or any other colors for that matter. Everybody out there wants to win.

Here’s my most purposeful attempt to define the problem some of us had with AR last season:

At the beginning of the season he absolutely balled out and showed a willingness to leave it all out there on the field. Dude was an absolute stud against Utah. Game 1. Put his body at risk to pick up crucial yardage on the ground. And of course, he had a rocket launcher of an arm. We all expected to see more of that level of commitment in the games to follow, and to be blunt, we didn’t see a lot of it going forward. This led some to question why.

All anybody can do is speculate why he made the decisions he made, primarily why he passed up obvious opportunities to run for big yardage, after showing such ability and willingness earlier. One very logical supposition is that he was avoiding the run to preserve his body with a certain future in the NFL in mind. Another is that he was choosing to showcase his arm to the NFL teams. These are logical thought processes— and they do carry the implication that he potentially put himself over our team. Obviously there is no “proof” for any hypothesis as you demand, any more than there’s any proof for any explanation you choose to share.

But one thing’s for sure — we never really saw the AR who balled out against Utah again during the remainder of the season. It’s human nature to wonder why.

    Does this help?

I as well as others were not fans of what we saw from his personal qb coach. I can only speculate but I wouldn't be surprised if that was a part of his ups and downs last year. By all accounts he's a great kid and anyone (one person in particular) that intimates people have more passion in their Fandom for guys like wuerffel, Tebow or Trask because of other "cultural" motives aren't worth the time. Ridiculous.

To add to Skink's post, but also somewhat answer it...
IMO the UK game was the biggest culprit- not self-preservation from the NFL.
We were all flying high after Utah, and then it all went south.
The culprit was Stoops defensive scheme and a UK cheap shot early. Both took the wind out of AR's sails.

The rest of the year was up and down. IMO AR improved a lot but his best receivers all got hurt.

IMO the bottom line is AR was really young and didn't have great supporting cast.
If all we saw of Danny W was his RS freshman year then his legacy would be mixed too.
I think that's what happened here.
