There are plenty of Gator fans on this board that fit that. They think AR didn’t try at UF and constantly question his character. Then there are people that view AR success as an indictment on Napier for being able to get wins out of a top 5 QB

Fair enough. I am not invested in his success but I have no desire to see him injured either.

That’s quite different than hoping someone will fail. From what I have read, I just don’t interpret it they way some of you do. Some didn’t think he was ready for the NFL and made valid points. I have never read anything on here or anywhere else where a Gator hopes he fails. If I missed it - then I am wrong and shame on them (and me!).

AR is a tremendous athlete. Whether HS or college, AR had injuries that knocked out of certain games. Can he stay injury free for an entire season? Don’t think you can be a running QB in the NFL and stay injury free. Have to become a pure passing QB and slide when you have to run. Will get better with experience. Only has a year of college starting experience. Too bad he does not have his great RB as an option due to injury and contract dispute. May help in game 5.

Well, since it will be 6 days before the Tennessee game, let's talk about AR and things we already have a LONG time ago.

What I said, and it is still apropos, is not what is AR or what he did for "our team" versus what he did for his interests, it is plainly about...why did a NFL team use a HIGH draft choice on a player who, while a great physical specimen, is fraught with unknowns. If you are enamored, get him in the second (or even third) round and do the basics in the NUMBER 4 position. What I saw (see my OP on this thread) was AR. Now, will he "get" the NFL game - recall, he did not really get the SEC game - or will he stay on the periphery?

THAT is the $64M question (upgraded for him;)). And it is going to be a VERY compelling activity to follow.

I don’t know how you missed it when it’s all over this board. Me personally, I rooted hard for Tebow. I was legit pissed how his career ended, because I really think he would have been a great pro eventually. But, I also root for Trask and AR the same. Pretty much any Gator gets my support in the pros.

Honestly the guy may have a reputation as a headhunter but its the goal line and youre fighting over inches down there. Im not sure how you turn a 240 lb monster like AR down at the goal line with that angle and size. No opportunity for a shoulder tackle at that angle. Could he have puled up...sure but he saved his team a few inches and thats what is taught down there.

Sorry to open this can of worms (but what else is there to do?), but when Tebow was being investigated for the NFL, his strength was running the spread option (not wildcat or the pro spread) and the conventional wisdom was (and likely still is) is not that you can't be successful running it but rather you can't run it as a philosophy - recall, you HAVE to adopt it and build a team to it - with only one QB. You likely need three Tebows on the active game roster to make sure you can overcome the dings. That costs a LOT of capital.

And then, THE salient point, and it goes directly to AR also, is that the coaches and GMs are just as invested in acquiring money and prestige in their areas as the players. And so, it is WAY safer to do the conventional and remain employed than it is to be bold and inventive. Since I follow the Jags, they have had two GMs recently (and I am not even talking about Coughlin) who flamed out famously. And they had some damn good pedigree.

I definitely thought AR was not ready for the NFL.
    I predicted he would
    • kill the combine as no other QB has ever done and an NFL team would fall in love with him and take him high.
    • That same team would rush him because he was a high draft pick.
    • Then he would struggle since he was thrown in too early, and things would devolve.
I read those who said he didn't give his all in his last year, and I didn't agree but I didn't disagree until...

I re-watched the season. He definitely gave his all, but he was clearly over his head vs UK and even Mizzou. He didn't play great vs Vandy, but he wasn't the reason we lost.

So I was right on a lot of fronts, but based on 1 game I was clearly wrong about his NFL readiness.
I did watch Bryce Young yesterday and he single-handedly lost the game for the Panthers. IT was just awful.
AR is far more ready than Young.

I wonder if Young being surrounded by 5 stars made him look better than he was, and AR being surrounded by our non-5 stars made him look worse than he was.

And yeah- I always rooted for him. He seems like a sweet kid.
I just thought he was too young, and wished he had come back.
The NFL is a tough place.
But that's far different from wishing him to fail...

AR has the arm to develop into an elite pass first mentality qb. I couldn’t really say that about Tebow.

I felt AR was a project for the colts but must admit he’s way ahead of where I’d thought he’d be. The question has never been about ability, it’s learning the details and the consistency needed to be a qb. I thought the best place to work on that would’ve been in college for another year even if he transferred out to do it. The NFL can wreck a qb’s confidence. I was wrong, but that’s nothing new, lol.

Granted, it was one game and we can be sure there will be ugly outings to come this year but he’s just shown he can perform at nfl level in his first game. Keep in mind, elite qbs even have rough games now and then(see Burrow’s stat line from week 1).

Major props to ar and his coaches. The tough part of being in the nfl is now he’ll be expected to perform that well in every game.

I really hope AR stays healthy. He was always injury prone and didn’t take big hits well. I’m in the camp of wishing he accomplished more here (since he’s an obvious generational physical talent) but I love the excitement he brought and I love him as a person/gator. I hope he has a stellar nfl career and reps us well.

Well, nobody has shown a specific quote of a fan on here (and not a troll) that says they hope AR fails. I see criticism, some valid, some not - but haven’t seen one that hopes he fails.
I am with you on Tebow - I think when they made him change his throwing motion, that is what doomed him.

What cracks me up is how concerned teams were because Tebow played almost exclusively from the shotgun, then a few years later Brady and Manning were in the shotgun.

    Wonder no more...lol

I think the Panthers should have realized that it will be a lot easier to correct AR's mechanics than it will be to correct Bryce Young's height.

Depends on the type of draft also. I got AR for $1 because it's an auction draft, and I threw him out early while people were still stingy with their money. He's boom or bust, and rushing TDs are a premium.
