You can't rely on him to consistently win you the game. I don't think he's bad, but I don't think any of us would say the offense played well against Utah. Not his fault. Just can't put more on his plate than he can handle.
He can handle it. The offense couldn’t…or more specifically, the offensive line couldn’t. You want him to take shots to open the offense, but if you rewatch the game, Mertz had very little time and got the ball out quickly because of it. If anything, it allowed us to see how defenses will play us and scheme accordingly moving forward.
Beth Mowins being able to be a television/radio voice of any type is just so bizarre. She doesn't have a good tonality to her voice for radio, television, or otherwise. So that's #1 and has nothing to do with gender. The sideline reporter for this game, a female, has a much better voice to listen to. I swear after about 15-minutes, I get some sort of fatigue listening to Beth Mowins voice almost to the point I want to shut off the sound. Next, I've complained once before that she screws up players names, changes names mid-broadcast (like someone came and told her, "hey, Eugene goes by Tre"), and just really doesn't seem to give a crap about research prior to games. I guess we get Beth Mowins because we're way down the pecking order now on TV broadcasts or does she do big games too? I wish they would find one of probably 100,000 other women in America that could do this job much better. Maybe that is why ESPN uses her, because they themselves are being protectionist about their broadcast jobs so they give us Beth Mowins instead of someone that could truly make people go "Damn, some women are actually better than the men in the broadcast booth! I want her for our future games!".
On TV I could swear our orange helmets looked the darkest orange I've ever seen them, like Blood Orange. Probably not because we were out for blood though, I'm guessing the LED's and it changed the color temperature a bit. I do think our field at night looked better on TV and with better cameras would look even better. Seems ESPN didn't bring out the best gear as resolution seemed lacking to me, but that could be compression in streaming. I know the helmet orange though was different.
I would say he’s trying to preserve a redshirt and keep the year of eligibility if he’s not going to start. Technically he redshirted in 2020, but that year didn’t count against their eligibility, so I’m not really sure how all that works. If it’s possible for him to retain this year’s eligibility, then it makes sense for him not to play unless we really need him to. I would assume he’s the true number two if we lost Mertz for a significant amount of time, but for garbage time, you might as well give the reps to Brown and see what you have there. Pure speculation on my part, of course.
They would have to tap into softball and maybe gymnastics or tennis to get play-by-play announcers. Beth as far as I know is the only female play-by-play announcer in any male sport.
Mowins said "26 Love" at halftime, I guess she's trying to cross-over some sports terms. Also noticing on re-watching game, she calls Johnson "Jackson" during the entire first series, not just 1-2 times. I see there is another thread on this too, sorry for posting here but not worth moving.
I tend to agree with you in principle, I guess some will say it could have been worse.. But then it would be due to the fact it’s hard to get up for such a weaker opponent… I’m just trying to be objective. I do this when we are good, bad or great.
I guess so, but frankly, Mertz's better than expected play against Utah was the only halfway encouraging thing that happened offensively in SLC, IMO anyway. I also thought GM was quite effective in keeping the ball moving last night, by adjusting to the deep drops and simply taking what was available while involving as many of his skill players as possible. Based on what I've seen to this point, I feel like we've been selling this kid a bit short. I know the national media has. I won't be shocked in the least if he plays a steady, productive game against UT and we pull off the upset. Milton doesn't scare me as much as he did after seeing him in action last night. He's got the big arm, but other than that I'm not sure that he's anything special. Accuracy and decision making don't seem to be strong points in his game.
Napier went directly to Rocco after the play and they had an extended one on one conversation, how is that a shoulder shrug?
She’s not good. I’m not a fan. She’s no Brad Nessler or Ron Franklin, but I guess she’s good enough to have a job at ESPN after the recent downsizing.
