I'm usually pretty combative with your takes on party descriptions but this will be the opposite.

The Trumpers are no different than the John Birch Society from the 1970s. The difference is the modern GOP decided they needed both their voices and votes to win elections. I believe we will see this start to fade as republicans figure out Trumpist attitudes are death in general elections and 2016 was a lucky draw to an inside straight.

I don't think you should feel that bad about morons liking stupid stuff. Hopefully that crowd will be going away soon.

 

I think once you delink yourself from a particular side, you tend to be more open minded on any particular issue. I went through that around 2003, when I stopped voting Republican and changed to mostly democratic. I could still very much support a sane republican like GHWB, or even Chris Christie or Nikki Haley. My biggest hurdles with even sane Republicans these days are

1. Abortion issue
2. The fact that even sane republicans are going to have to cater to the nut jobs to some degree.

Republicans were cool before they became just another authoritarian big gov party. I'll take my authoritarian big gov party (Dems) with social and cultural freedoms, at least.
