Watching the game in full speed while probably drinking is a lot different than being able to analyze plays in slow motion

    Also he shows every play

For me, the bottom line is that I believe this offense will have issues trying to score against solid SEC defenses and will put way too much burden on a D that has some youth playing lots of snaps. With this offense, I think we will be lucky to win 6 games. That being said, I believe after the season BN will relinquish his role as OC and will hopefully want an O that spreads the field and utilizes skilled play makers in space. That alone would be a very positive step. As to the D, I really think we have the right guy as DC. With experience this year and a great D recruiting crop coming in, I think we can be a very good D within a year or two.

Mertz was the beneficiary of Utah's D allowing short yardage catches that included the 4th quarter where they were content to allow short passes that simply ate up clock. Now, I really don't blame Mertz for this is imo how he is being coached, I dislike this O scheme period.

I wouldn’t doubt that the new OC might consider the Georgia model too over trying to run a fast offense for the lack of talent. It seems they are building long-term instead of trying to make a quick fix. Both options are probably on the table as they should be.

I like it but the recruits of the last two years were tailored to run BN's offense. The new OC will have to build a hybrid until the right players are brought in via the portal and/or recruiting.

I'm not so sure. BN has brought speed to the wr's and our rbs are quick themselves. Recruit some good TE's and I think the transition would be fairly smooth. I think run/pass blocking would be different so that may take a bit of time. Listen, if UT could transition with a wide open offense with a new coach, so can we.

I watched plenty of this one, and especially the last 5 minutes or so. What I got was what I said after last season, that Napier had a nice in by signing former USF HC Jeff Scott (a buddy of his) to be his OC. He did not, and I questioned why? It was all so perfect of a scenario.

And so, Napier is continuing to pursue doing too many jobs. This is concerning... again.

Hopeful, but jury still out on Mertz. He was 22-29 for 218 AFTER Utah raced to 24-3 lead.

Week one Mertz had the 70th most efficient passing rating in the nation per Will Miles.

I think you are being overly harsh. I suggest besides watch GNFP, you watch Varnadore also. The pass rush did not allow Mertz to hold the ball long enough for how some of our routes develop, so he had to do a lot of short throws, and he was laid out to dry by some receivers not running their routes or breaking them off (Montrell is horrible with that), including the interception.
It was obvious he was told to take only what he was given, and the routes his receivers ran showed that too. We had the chance to get within 6, and Mertz was hit on his delivery making his pass inaccurate. If we had run a hurry up offense, he would have gotten those same yards and more, and had a chance to win.
He was also under pressure on 25% of his passes. That makes that completion percentage remarkable. Considering how much he was under pressure and problems with receivers' miscues, he did quite well to deliver. I can't imagine a first year qb having to go through that. He wasn't perfect, but it was nice seeing some wrinkles back in our offense, like actually being able to perform a screen pass. He really needs help from his receivers, TE and OL that he is not getting. Hopefully some of that can be corrected, but I am only betting on the receivers getting corrected.

he would’ve had to let someone go on the offensive staff (I’d presume one of the o line coaches since we have two).
I wonder if Billy has been counting on the NCAA expanding on field coaching staffs. It was rumored to happen / be approved last year but was postponed.

I bet he would like to promote O’Hara to on field QB coach, hire a full time special teams coach (on field) and possibly an OC but doesn’t want to make room by getting rid of any current on field coaches. Just a thought.

    Not buying it yet.
He averaged 7.6 yards per attempt. 20% of his attempts went twenty or more yards in the air. Eight of his completions were screens. If he had so little time, why did they have him pump-faking so much ? It’s not like it fooled Utah in the least. I agree with others that his stats hide the ugly.

Ok cool, how about amongst QBs facing Top 25 opponents? A one week sample size is garbage when you're comparing him against like 50 other QBs who played against glorified high school teams.

Watch the replays. Our receivers tried double moves repeatedly, but they did it too shallow, and Utah being well coached didn't bite. Only one double move worked and resulted in a long gain. It wasn't a medical condition.

Mertz made some bad reads and had some inaccurate throws. I'm not saying he was terrible, but he is exactly who I think he is.. an inconsistent QB.

He is inconsistent. There is a difference between a 70+% inconsistent passer and a 55% inconsistent passer, but then most college qb are inconsistent, especially ones available in the portal. I'll take him over what Ohio State put on the field. The biggest thing that would improve him and our chances of winning other than OL/TE play is his feel for the pocket under pressure and timing.
