THIS is how conservative Republicans should conduct themselves, though many in that party would try to demean him as a "RINO" when he is really a "RIPO" (Republican In Practice Only). Integrity is completely absent from the MAGA wing of the GOP, and that saddens me.
    https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2023/09/01/kemp-willis-special-session/

"[K]emp’s repudiation of GOP efforts to go after Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis (D) for her indictment of former president Donald Trump is a practical one. Just as in December 2020 he said he didn’t have the authority to call a special session to help overturn the election results for Trump, he declines now to call such a session to oust Willis, again saying he simply doesn’t have the power to do so.

But Kemp didn’t stop there. The Georgia governor went on to admonish the conspiratorial and increasingly punitive segment of his party, continuing a trend of Georgia Republicans like him standing up to that element in a way that others haven’t.

Kemp seriously undercut both Trump and the GOP’s continual unsubstantiated claims of the “weaponization” of the government. 'Up to this point, I have not seen any evidence that DA Willis’ actions or lack thereof warrant action by the prosecuting attorney oversight commission,' Kemp said Thursday. He added, 'As long as I am governor, we’re going to follow the law and the Constitution, regardless of who it helps or harms politically.'

"Kemp also conspicuously referred to 'some grifter scam that somebody’s doing to help them raise a few dollars in their campaign account'."

Inasmuch as the MAGA cult didn't recognize integrity and fealty to our Constitution in Cheney and Kinzinger, I doubt they'll appreciate it in Kemp.

Good for him, no doubt. But I wonder how much of this is based in self preservation in a state that is turning purple instead of red?

    Cynic!
Perhaps you're right, but I take him at his word. Besides, all politicians wishing to stay in power calculate.

I'm sure maga world is already slamming him. That said, good for him for standing on principle instead of falling into that cult of personality bullshit.

It’s always hard to know the true beliefs that underlie politicians’ actions. However, we could employ this same reasoning in the opposite direction to excuse MTG’s lunacy as an act just based in self preservation, which seems wrong.

At this point, turning on one’s party to uphold the rule of law is a rare enough act that I think Kemp deserves respect, even if his actions might have been partly enabled by a changing electorate.

No, we can't make excuses for MTG. Right can be right and wrong can be wrong, you don't always have to create some middle ground gray area to camp out in.

Agreed. This is why I was saying it seemed wrong to use that line of reasoning.

I’m having an Oliver Anthony moment:

The devil went down to Georgia, he was lookin' for an election to steal.
He was in a bind 'cause his electoral votes were way behind
And he was willin' to make a deal.

The boy said, "my name's Kemp and it might be a sin
But I'll take your bet, you're gonna regret
'Cause the constitution the best there's ever been.”

On second thought, I’ll keep my day job. :D

Yes it’s the same one. But I don’t think there is anything hypocritical about applauding one action and not another from the same person. In fact, I think it’s a good sign that not all left leaning posters fell on some excuse for the behavior, eg “He still rotten. He just knows that if he doesn’t do this, he will be…etc.”

I didn’t use the word hypocritical. I didn’t even suggest it. I do think anyone calling him racists was wrong. I do think he has proven to be a good governor.

Just like when Pence finally did something worthy of recognition on Jan 6, Kemp is doing something noteworthy in Georgia on this. Doesn't wipe the slate clean, but deserves to be acknowledged.

Im sorry. I inferred the hypocritical thing, since these two event would seem unrelated otherwise.
