One last story, I swear. We had tickets to see Jimmy on Dec 8, 1998. It was my 40th birthday and I was super excited.

About three weeks before the show I had an appointment with an oncologist in Orlando, they thought I might have ovarian cancer.

My first question/statement to the surgeon was that I had concert tickets and we had to work around that. We did and I went.

Nope. 80's kid here...but, love that tune. He played it live the last time * saw him. He always rotated some cool old stuff into his set

True but I was thinking about the line "I rolled down the window and told the man 50 cents worth please" you had to be from the 60s to remember putting a dollars worth of gas in your car and also to have a man pump it for you. Also some of the terms used in that song just aren't used anymore, example: when is the last time you heard a gas station called a filling station.
Also in the 60s I always had a pellet gun in the glove box of my old 61 ford falcon. Never used it for a hold up though, usually used it to shoot holes in mail boxes or street signs or other hijinks.

When I started driving (1988) gas was 99 xent occasionally. I do remember my parents getting full service gas vaguely. Ive never done it.

Great old Letterman clip where he does my favorite (Distantly in love) and Come Monday. Just him and a guitar.
In the lead in interview he almost comes off as shy, which is interesting. Songs start at about 4 minutes.

Yeah I should have said recorded, not released.

And all the respect in the world. I love buffet and have seen him live a few times (including an impromptu acoustic solo show he played under a pseudonym at florabama lounge). But it’s most certainly a “schtick.” Apologies if that offends you.

"Was never a huge fan" to "I love buffett"

    Sounds like toilet paper math.

But I'll take you at your word--your appreciation seems sincere.

As for "schtick"--it implies pretending to be something he wasn't, and that's just not accurate.

It would be schtik if he assumed a make believe pirate persona when he took the stage, then reverted to a dry, boring business man off stage.

Buffett was a dreamer on and off stage, who shared his dreams, where he--Jimmy Buffett-- was narrator and author, telling stories, not a pretend character of those stories.

And he was as open a book as there's ever been. And his travel logs testify to the walk behind his talk.

Dude was the real deal. As real as they get.

They don’t make them like Jimmy anymore!

He and Mike Leach are enjoying one with the Pirates tonight!

    RIP!

Yeah, he was shot out of the sky for being confused for a smuggler. Swam to shore after crashing his plane another time. Lived in the air and on the sea.

Really one of life's true rare adventures. Dude was a living multi volume Hemingway novel.

    He was buddies with Urban.

Drink it up, this one's for you
    It's been a lovely cruise
I'm sorry it's ending, oh it's sad, but it's true
Honey, it's been a lovely cruise
    These moments we're left with
    May you always remember
These moments are shared by few
There's wind in our hair and there's water in our shoes
Honey, it's been a lovely cruise
    "So let's cruise darlin'"
Ohhh, these moments we're left with
    May you always remember
These moments are shared by few
And those harbor lights, lord, they're coming into view
We'll bid our farewells much too soon
So drink it up, this one's for you
Honey, it's been a lovely cruise
Yeah baby, it's been a lovely cruise
Oh darlin', it's been a lovely cruise

    Bitter pill.

I am still seething over the recent change of the name of the popular Margaritaville Hotel on Pensacola Beach, and the associated Frank & Lola Love Pensacola Cafe.

Management decided to rebrand to a generic hotel name.

Their loss, Jimmy. Hope you put up another one in the beyond. I want my cheeseburger in Paradise.

Perhaps love was too strong of a word. I appreciate and enjoy Jimmy Buffett. But his whole beach bum pirate thing was most certainly a schtick, especially the last 30+ years of his career when he was running Margaritaville, Inc.

Again sorry if that makes you fussy. RIP to JB.

I wonder if Jimmy will be buried at sea or on land.

If they're changing the name of the cafe, they also cured the locals of giving a rat's ass about getting a chance to eat there. Jimmy didn't sell the place. Did he just give them permission to do it? Maybe he knew his time was short already and didn't care anymore.

Interesting description in the NYT headline:
Jimmy Buffett, Roguish Bard of Island Escapism, Is Dead at 76

I didn't think of him as island escapism at the time because it wasn't really a distant lifestyle to me in the '70s. Actually, the pure party atmosphere surrounding him became something of turnoff, tbh, whether it was drunk frat guys or drunk boomers wearing Hawaiian shirts with plastic parrots on their heads.

But whether cultivated or not, those first few albums always felt like an honest reflection of a loose Key West lifestyle that a lot of people could relate to, whether you grew up on the Florida beaches or in the upper Midwest.
And perhaps the bottom line was that Jimmy always seemed just so darn likable.

To those of you that think his music is shtick, listen to some of his older stuff. Don’t think that Cheeseburger in Paradise is representative of his music.
