Florida sophomore power forward Aleks Szymczyk, who made 14 appearances as a true freshman last year but largely spent the year focused on development, suffered a broken foot in practice on Tuesday and will miss 10-12 weeks as a result.
Well, damn. I was hoping he'd take a big step forward this year - and he still may - but this has him cleared to play about when the season starts and will put him behind in terms of working with the new guys and in terms of conditioning.
That puts him around Thanksgiving for a return, and I never trust a broken foot to heal because of the daily stress on it. He may want to consider redshirting. Tough break for the young man.
Tough break for him, he looked like he had a nice shooting stroke, I was hoping he could be developed to deliver the threes and assists. He was working hard as a freshman. Best of luck big guy! January would be a reasonable point to return so he can condition him body and keep a close eye on his foot. We don’t want him to lose the whole season and I am sure he wants to play!
Fortunately we are blessed with plenty of depth up front this year. But you hate to see a guy miss an opportunity to compete because of injury. Guess it should open some more minutes to get a look at the freshmen in the early season.
Shimmy brings a wide body, wide shoulders, and long arms to the court. I can see him becoming a formidable rebounder at some point, and this only sets him farther behind.
One of the few returnees from last year, so at least he knows Golden's style of play. If all goes well, he'll be back at full strength, no later than the beginning of SEC play.
It pains me whenever I see a kid get hurt like that. I trust he has the best care possible. So, is the program snake bit or does this happen elsewhere every stinkin' year?
