DeSantis changed course on several fronts, but he did encourage people to take the vaccine and said it was saving lives. He also let it be known that he look the vaccine himself before arguing it was a private issue when refusing to answer whether he'd taken subsequent doses. People may have liked that Florida was more open, but it's not like he wasn't promoting the vaccine at least when the numbers got bad.

Besides the statement being inaccurate the reason that most people are moving to Florida from other states probably has little to do with the DeSantis covid policy but is rather most likely for the same reasons that people have been moving to Florida for decades, climate, lower taxes and the lower cost of housing in most of the state (the Miami area being a significant exception).

To get us started, here are the basic numbers:
United States COVID - Coronavirus Statistics - Worldometer (worldometers.info)

Florida was tenth in deaths per million, at 4,186 deaths per million population. The average for the country was 3,546. The favorite state to bash for how poorly they handled covid, California, only had 2,646 deaths per million.

What factors can we include that make it look like Florida was one of the best instead of one of the worst?

Q has no numbers. Because all the proof shows his opinions are nothing but his opinions. For example, Florida was the 12th worst state in regards to COVID mortality rate per capita. Lots of red states on the top of this list. And also poor states like New Mexico. Arizona used to be a deep red state, but one of the reason the state has turned purple is a larger number of deep red voters died from COVID, especially in poor and rural areas. This, along with poverty and distrust with the government was given as reasons why Arizona was at the top of the list.

This report also shows Florida was #2 in total pediatric COVID cases and likely lead per capita (not listed in report), and also lead the country in pediatric COVID hospitalizations. Are these numbers indicative of Florida doing the best during COVID?

I'll go back to a question Q has completely refused to answer. How many more COVID deaths were acceptable to you to keep schools open? I know he won't answer, because there is no good answer other than none. And keeping schools open absolutely caused the spread of COVID. I've linked a Euro study showing schools were a big part of COVID spread, and another Euro study that shows keeping schools closed was one of the most successful mitigation efforts. So, how many more deaths were acceptable, Q?

You have seen them. You know them. From Covid to education to quality of life.

Don’t let the narrative drivers get you and ignore demographics/risk groups.

He did push the shot. Shoot. I did as well for those who were in high risk groups and had not gotten Covid at the time (my position has clearly gone to the shot is unnecessary with time/seroprevalence/concern with side effects). More importantly he pushed monoclonals and was a driving reason they became known during the delta wave. And in an unprecedented evil political move the feds made it harder for Florida access them at one point.

He was by far the best Governor.

Florida faired extremely well considering the number of high risk people that live in this state. You know we are a retirement haven…

You do this crap every time. I have provided you the numbers. You know Florida has an age demographic that will skew numbers if you want to be fed a narrative like you do.

At this point. Even if you are old and have comorbidities...there is no reason for the shot. We have treatments finally that are reasonable and seroprevalence is a real thing. Should have been found (well most likely were by shelved) way earlier.

    Glad I live in Florida!!!

Okay, so you believe if we factor in our elderly population, then Florida will compare more favorably?

States Ranked by Percent of Population Age 65 or Older, 2020

Only Maine has us beat in old people. Florida was second in the country with 21.3% of its population aged 65 or older in 2020, Maine had 21.8% of their population aged 65 or older in 2020.

Florida had 4,186 deaths per million due to covid. Maine had 2,303. If Florida had handled covid like Maine, with its similar elderly population, we would have had about 39k fewer deaths. Closer to 50,000 dead Floridians instead of 89,905. This seems different from data that supports the claim Florida was superior in navigating covid.

Do you have any data that does support your claims?

Really phil? You want to compare Florida to Maine? 1.37 million to 21.38 million? There are even more issues to a very complex question. For whatever reason Covid seems to hit regionally/seasonally. Notice Florida has big breakouts in summer. Likely people going inside for air conditioning. The northeast seems to be hit in the winter. Going inside for heat. Those might be an explanation. It might be the virus just runs regionally for some reason. But considering Florida took the brunt of the delta wave while we were still screwing this thing up with the demographics we have. You can only search for reason to say Florida did poorly. Everyone knows Florida crushed it with handling Covid. It was not perfect. But for a large state it was the Gold Standard!

You are the same one who tried to make the claim that Florida had the 3rd most Covid deaths was a reason DeSantis was bad.

You are not looking for answers. You knew that was a BS statement. Florida is the third largest state. It made total sense Florida would likely be right in the realm of having the third most deaths for this disease.

Look. If you are still part of the few who can’t move on. Great. The information is there for you. I have provided plenty and my thoughts on it. You don’t have to agree with it. You would be in a minority now. Majority at one point.

Just spare me the nonsensical stuff…

No, I'm the one that pointed out the importance of using rates rather than raw numbers by demonstrating that the statistical analysis you were applying to say that vaccinations weren't effective was the same as saying that Florida did a bad job of handling covid because they had the third most deaths.

We also have the third highest population. Saying that we had the third most deaths gives a misleading picture of what really happened. We need to look at the rates, which show Florida to have the 10th most deaths and the vaccinations to be highly effective.

As usual, you demonstrated a lack of understanding of statistics and an incredible arrogance that keeps you from understanding why your claims aren't supported by the data.

Edit: I hate being wrong almost as much as Meyer hates losing. The first few times you tried to play this game, I put hours into trying to figure out why I couldn't see in the data what you were seeing in the data. Even reached out for 2nd and 3rd opinions on what I was doing wrong in my analyses that I couldn't come up with the same answers as you were from the same data. Eventually I figured out that you weren't doing any real analysis, just posting links and giving an opinion that had no relationship to the actual data you were posting. I'm still happy to look at any data you present, but when it doesn't support your claims, I don't stress myself about it anymore, just do the analysis and go with what the data says rather than your narrative about what you want it to see.

For those following along at home, I will point out that QGator still hasn't attempted to provide any data supporting his claims.

No. Data can be used and interpreted differently. You only want to focus on what provides you the answer you want. I provide a different viewpoint and you refuse to even consider it.

I acknowledge the age adjusted rates. But those are not significant unless necessary imo. You can find the hard data unnecessary. That is fine. But a major point in the hard data for me was the clear lie being pushed by the media in our country. Which built on why there was no need for the shot for a healthy person. Even the hard data in our country (which would have to be extrapolated from local newspapers) showed the lie. There was never a pandemic of the “unvaccinated”. The elderly with comorbidities and those with comorbidities were the ones dying and in the hospital. As time went on I certainly gained more concern for the safety. Now to the point I wish I had never said anyone should have taken the drug. Even with the potential therapeutic benefit.
