Breakdowns always show the perfect read in hindsight but some of that was pretty difficult to watch. Hope he's grown
I hope Napier spent all off season teaching Mertz post snap reads... stop locking onto first receiver too long. He also needs to use his legs every once and a while to keep the defense honest in pass plays. Take what the defense gives you and work/scan the field for second receiver... third receiver... run if you have to run.
If a couple of big IFs go our way Mertz could have a big year. Mertz has a big and accurate arm; not Trask accurate mind you, but pretty good. So..... IF our big offensive line is mobile enough to keep a strong pocket and give Mertz time to throw he has the potential to pick a defense apart. This assumes that we pick up the edge rush and the blitzing linebacker/safety. IF Mertz has learned to look for the post snap read and run when the opportunity is there he can extend drives and score TDs. Let's hope all of the above is true.
