They probably did have a preconceived notion to start mayfield from the beginning. It’s the opposite of what the packers did with love. It seems after 2 years the Bucs weren’t ready to give trask the keys. As for looking foolish, licht will no matter who starts. The guy you spent a 2nd rounder on? Or you big 4mil FA acquisition?
Bowles might decide. Maybe that’s why the only got a first year OC. I hope not cause that’s pretty dumb. If Bowles really does decide, I’m not sure why he would pick a guy like mayfield though.
I think Bowles is trying to get to 7 wins and save his job. Mayfield is more likely to get to that than Trask. Trask has a far higher ceiling though.
In football, as in just about all sports, it is "what have you done for me lately?" And, IMO, the Superbowl winning team was mainly about a damn fine defense (pass rushing especially) and not an offensive juggernaut. Brady (and Fournette) were great, and fortuitous, pieces to acquire. The defense...and the O-line...is not up to a Superbowl standard today.
Trask could go 26 of 31 for 334 yds with 4 TDs and 0 picks and he'd still be put behind Mayfield, Bridgewater, DeBerg, Peete, Fromm, and Morningwheig.
The NFL has always confused me. Trask balled out rather nicely in Gainesville. Pretty dependable. Consistent. Oh well... Go Gators.
For those that hope Bowles is canned...a new regime is just as likely to wipe the QB slate clean as it is to give Trask a shot. It's not a sure thing that Trask gets picked up for a QB1 shot on the open market.
Hmmm . . . Bowles doesn't like him because? Obviously he wasn't going to start over the GOAT. That leaves us with exactly one training camp and a veteran former #1 pick brought in to take the reigns. If Bowles didn't like Trask, he wouldn't remain on the roster, esp. as the presumptive backup QB. Also strange that you would suggest they trade a former 2nd round pick for a 3rd/4th round pick. Talk about GM failures.
Yeah, but he probably would start ahead of Donald Douglas. Okay, MAYBE he would. Even so, he would DEFINTELY start ahead of Larry Ochab. Guaranteed!
Trask was the #3 last year. He didn’t dress. So it’s not just a matter of starting him Yes they should trade him while he has some value. His value is clearly not a 2nd. Lance just went for a 4th. Trask is lower than that at this point But what is the alternative? Lose him for nothing? Sunk cost fallacy The reality is that the Bucs don’t like him. He couldn’t beat out Blaine Gabbert and Baker Mayfield. It is what it is. The longer it goes the harder it will be to crack QB1 for any team
I don’t think it’s a reality they don’t like him. I do believe the Bucs might have wanted a vet backup the last two years rather than an inexperienced guy. Let’s just hope he shines when he finally gets in the field
Yeah asking for Bowles to get canned is definitely one of those "be careful what you wish for" things. If they bring in a new coach the first thing he'll do is bring in his own hand-picked QB, whether it's via draft, trade or free agency. That will leave Trask out in the cold. I know people don't like to exercise patience but they will simply have to, Trask will eventually get his shot when Mayfield stinks it up (very possible) or gets injured (again very possible due to that offensive line). What Trask does with those snaps will be crucial because that will be his opportunity to put together some good game tape that will interest another team into trading for him or signing him when he's a free agent.
Bowles is on the hot seat. I don't think he has the luxury of letting personal feelings get in the way of selecting a starting QB, that's the most crucial position that will literally make or break his coaching status.
Well exactly. That’s why he’s going with a vet. Mayfield is more likely to be perfectly mediocre which is Bowles best chance at saving himself. Trask has higher upside but can be a total dud as well
One of THE things that gets missed on fan forums is not that "their guy" was dissed (see Tebow/NFL threads) but rather the business of football, while noble in the purpose to win games, is mainly about financial viability and ultimately prosperity. And while we focus on the players, it is equally so for the management. THEY enjoy the financial side of a noble idea. Now where things get tangential to our way of thinking is...how did the coaches/GMs get to their place? IMO, Bowles is a prime example of the Peter Principle. He does not have what it takes to be a successful HC at the NFL level. Really no different than Mus-take deciding that Henry was going to make a damn fine linebacker. But still, it is natural to believe and be motivated by the notion that, if you are going to go down, you are going to do down your way (see Mullen). And that also goes with GMs, and THE best way of slowing down the "getting canned" process is to have a viable strategy that looks like it needs some time to manifest. Like getting a veteran QB like Rogers, Wilson and perhaps Mayfield and giving them the time to take you to the promised land. Trask will be fine. He WILL make an NFL roster (and paycheck) for a third straight year. Just because he is "one of us" does not mean he isn't a part of a harsher reality of the HUGE moneymaker known as NFL football. And to me, that isn't even the worse one out there. NBA basketball, IMO, is WAY worse.
