    Classic Bruni!

Opinion | What I Saw on That G.O.P. Debate Stage Was Complete and Utter Moral Cowardice

“Ron DeSantis faulted Donald Trump for the Covid lockdowns during his presidency. Nikki Haley slammed him for runaway government spending. They did so early during the Republican presidential debate on Wednesday night and they did so readily, as if showing voters just how dauntless and independent they were. What guts!

“What bunk. When they were later asked to raise their hands if they would support Trump as the 2024 Republican nominee even if he’d been convicted of a felony, up shot DeSantis’s arm. Haley’s, too. No hesitation. No equivocation. No concern about which of Trump’s 91 felony counts might be under discussion. No insistence that they’d have to see how strong the evidence turned out to be. Just fealty. It’s what the Republican electorate seems to insist on, so it’s what all eight candidates onstage in Milwaukee except Chris Christie and Asa Hutchinson pledged.

“The degrees of that fealty varied widely. On the wobbly end was Mike Pence, whose campaign arc has been the continued growth of a spine sorely missing during almost the entirety of the Trump administration. At the debate, that backbone had a big, thrilling, strangely poignant spurt.

“Although Pence indicated the same perverse willingness as DeSantis and Haley to look past Trump’s possible rap sheet, he also delivered a soliloquy that didn’t just establish but exulted in his refusal on Jan. 6, 2021, to grant Trump’s request that he not certify Joe Biden’s election victory.”

    It gets better.

I somewhat agree. This issue, which piggybacked of her “politicized DOJ” comment, was the one glaring failure for Haley imo. As I stated in another thread, I hope this was only tactical lip service on her part.

It's tactical but historically consistent with her other comments...on and off the trump bandwagon. She's trying to walk a fence, don't think it's gonna work tho.

There is a glaring error in that article.

“What bunk. When they were later asked to raise their hands if they would support Trump as the 2024 Republican nominee even if he’d been convicted of a felony, up shot DeSantis’s arm. Haley’s, too. No hesitation. No equivocation."

Watch the video, advance to 1:07. When the question is asked, DeSantis does hesitate, he clearly and deliberately looks to the right and then left to see what everyone else is doing before he then quickly sticks his hand up in the air.

    Coward.

I've never seen 4 "Come On Mans" that should be considered badges of honor more than your four.

Odd you should say that because just now I saw them and chuckled at how predictable those four are. (I'll get more 'fore the day is done.) They almost never specify what statement(s) they disagree with in an article that makes many statements. Do you suppose they consider every single negative one about Trump objectionable?

Probably, which is why I've put them on IGNORE. They have taken partisanship to the extreme and, thus, can bring nothing of substance to the table.

Give DeSantis a break. The poor guy needs Casey there to tell him what to do or say. Just like back when Nancy was cueing Ronnie during questions from reporters. (Nancy [whispers]: We're doing all we can. Ronnie: We're doing all we can.) Of course there's no reason why DeSantis can't resort to having a little earpiece so Casey could instruct him that way. Remember when Dubya, in the middle of a debate monologue, interrupted himself by saying, "Let me finish!" Gee, I wonder who he was talking to. Of course no one tried to find out.

This dog whistle “weaponization of the DOJ” is misplaced and dangerous. The last time the independence of the DOJ was compromised was under john Mitchell, and we saw what happened to him. (No, I haven't forgotten Barr.) Garland is a thoroughly honorable man with unimpeachable integrity. I defy anyone to present facts which show otherwise.

It’s a sad state of affairs when indicting someone is deemed “weaponization” despite facts which show criminal behavior.

Vast majority were spewing straight up talking points, weaponized DOJ, education bad, abortion until birth is everywhere…. Even the guy who said he was the only one that wasn’t a kept bitch. The only one with a pulse is also clearly batshit Q or just trolling for power.

A lot f very weak performances

A cult is a sad state of affairs, but that's what we'll have in America probably till Trump shuffles off this mortal coil. A smaller cult may then arise or persist expecting him to rise from the dead to save America, if he actually really died. In any case he'll be expected back. Hopefully such a cult won't be taken seriously by most Americans, though with Trump and his followers you can never know.

It also strikes me that if Trump is somehow elected (sadly still possible) or for that matter Ramaswamy or DeSantis they would weaponize the federal government including the DOJ, FBI and IRS against their enemies essentially what the Republicans have accused Biden and Garland. In case anyone may not remember this from the first and hopefully only Trump administration is a preview.
Comey, McCabe faced rare, intensive tax audits by IRS under Trump appointee: report
The taxpayer compliance audits are extremely rare and so invasive that they have been described as "audits from hell". If one of Trump's perceived enemies was subject to that type of audit it could be dismissed as an unlucky coincidence. When it happens twice to two "enemies" of Donald Trump it was more than coincidence.

That looked bad and was immediately obvious. RD to a fault always attempts to provide the maga populist response. Last night for tough questions instead of answering, he tried to disrupt the entire intention of the topic. I’m not sure he can provide an earnest reply anymore.

I abhor the idea of them supporting trump if convicted of election fraud or whatever, but at least Nikki bravely (and disappointedly) shot up her arm.

When all was said and done and the lights were dimmed:

"Their debate performances mingled moral cowardice with political malpractice to produce a baffling, exasperating, infuriating spectacle."
    -- Frank Bruni

Are they (as well as Biden) the best America can offer?

GOP candidates vying to see who gets to be blown away by a midnight dump of mail-in votes for Biden.

If Nikki Haley becomes the Republican nominee she would have a very good chance of making Joe Biden a one-term president. Logical or not Republican primary voters apparently would prefer to do down with the Orange Man.

why in the hell do you think Trump can't beat Biden? I think he can & probably will. there are a lot of reasons why....won't get into all of them now, but just the right VP choice could be the ticket. All these Nouveau Never Trumpers will jump right back on board. "Oh, I despise Trump, but Tim Scott is good guy" for example.

Biden shouldn't run for re-election for the good of the country, being perhaps the easiest opponent that Trump could have. But Biden is like Trump in that respect, thinking only of himself.
