"The Bucs are finalizing a deal with former No. 1 overall pick Baker Mayfield, NFL Network Insider Tom Pelissero reported on Wednesday, per sources.
Mayfield, 27, will sign a one-year deal worth up to $8.5 million, per NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport. Mayfield's deal with Tampa Bay will include $2 million signing bonus, Pelissero added."

What does he need to do to get the 4.5 million in bonuses?

Hmmm...no wonder Spurs loved Wuerffel so much!

I will always remember Wuerffel in the pros, sitting on the ground with his helmet backwards and the official claiming he didn't see a facemask penalty.

As I see it, this speeds up the ultimate demise of the Bucs' HC and General Manager. IMO, the sooner the better.

Baker Mayfield named Bucs starting quarterback

You sound like 100% of home board'rs that are blinded their allegiences.

Nothing against the guy. I really don't care. The team is going to suck this season. They need to clean house. Starting Mayfield probably gets them there quicker. It probably speaks volumes that the guy that is going into his, what, 3rd season couldn't beat out a former #1 overall pick turned journeyman.

I stand by my previous comment they need to tank and get Williams or Maye.

Yes, it's very odd to see a "homeboard'r" on a homeboard. Not sure what I was thinking...

Just watch. When Mayfield screws up on and off the field, Trask will get his chance. Not saying he'll ever be one of the best 30 QBs in the world, but, the kid has lots of unappreciated talent. He has moved up from third string scout team behind the greatest of all time to second string on the roster (and he's poised to take advantage when his number is called). I reject your reality and substitute my own.

Seems like they had a pre-conceived plan to go with Mayfield all along and Trask starting was just window dressing (for a Gator centric fanbase). If I was in charge and I spent a bunch of money to bring someone in and didn't start him, I would look foolish. And we can't have that now can we.

Who's your college team/alma mater? Be honest.

Edit: I see that Samdingo is indeed a Nole fan (as I suspected). At least they are transparent about it.

    Then again, it probably doesn't.

How does that speak volumes? Do you know what the phrase even means? You say Baker is a #1 pick and a journeyman in the same sentence. So what point are you trying to make. Is he good or is he bad?

Naw, you just don't get it. All that matters in modern football is what ranking they had after they finished their 9th grade. After they have "proven" themselves to be a savior or a bum, that is their lot in life. And we all know what Mayfield is and what Trask is.

And I believe the scientists are working on a gene analysis to determine whether it wise to give your infant a football, a soccer ball, a baseball, or "Welcome to Walmart" shirts with their name on them.

Seems like this argument could run both ways though, where it would look foolish to draft a QB in the second round and never start him. I’ve never been a part of an NFL front office, but I know that usually sports people want to win. Thinking Mayfield gives them a better chance to do that doesn’t seem obviously insane, especially if their system is benefitted by an athletic QB. I hope we see Trask this year at some point because I personally like him, but I won’t assume the Bucs gave up a bunch of wins just to save face.

True, but when you took Trask in the second round you had Brady who was obviously going to be the starter. I'm not saying Trask as lit it up in his career with the Bucs but when you hire a free agent for a QB, the tendency is to start that person. When a QB is drafted, they become a back up unless they are one of the top 3 picks or so.

    OR...

You are incompetent but you like your paycheck and you figure out how to fake it for as long as you can. And so, you figured out that if you have a new toy, plenty of folks think it better than the old toy, regardless. And so you let them.

Really no different than talent acquisition at the college level. The new toy is better than the old one. At least to the fans who post on recruiting boards.

Trask wasn’t even the backup. He was 3rd string

It’s clear Bowles doesn’t like him. Now I don’t trust Bowles motivations or his ability to ID talent, but it’s obvious Trask isn’t coveted in Tampa.

The odd thing is why he hasn’t been traded. Tampa should have flipped him for 3rd or 4th round pick.

Who is incompetent in your scenario? Not the GM who brought in a Super Bowl just a couple years ago…

Do you believe Bowles tells his Offensive Coordinator who he has to play? Have you ever heard any rumors about teams trying to trade for trask?

    I think Bowles decides

I haven’t heard any rumors but that’s what makes me even more worried about Trask. If Tampa clearly doesn’t like him and no other team wants to trade for him….
