I publicly pledge to be very patient with CBN after reading that. He deserves a long leash. Cleaning up this mess will take awhile.

The special teams coaching under Urban was just absolutely outstanding. He dialed in to an unappreciated aspect of the game and made it his own. I remember him speaking in an interview saying he thought ST was as critical as offense or defense so he wanted to be heavily involved. He said big plays in T will break the opponents back...which it did in his tenure...many times. You could almost peg 14 points a game for them which just made that team infinitely more difficult to deal with.

On the other hand where we are currently with special teams and some high school kid blindly leading one of the worst special teams units Ive ever seen at UF. I sure hope we make a marked improvement this year in our special teams.

Pell not only had to rebuild the team, but deal with a shabby set of run-down facilities...He had the larger rebuild job because he had to go out and press the flesh to raise money to fix those too.

Crazy how 1 play can change everything.

Trey Dean doesn't fumble after that turnover vs. Bama, Gators are in the playoff and who knows from there.

Brother, what do you think the AD and Napier are having to do for NIL?

You're forgetting how innovative the Meyer/Mullen offense was when they came to UF, and how much impact and influence it had on college football. They won a national championship before TT became the starting QB.

Speaking of which, I was in Glendale for the BCSCG against tOSU. That game was such a freaking coaching masterpiece... I get it, January 2007 was a long time ago, memories give way to recency bias and the last few years haven't been kind to Meyer or Mullen. But let's not go overboard and say these guys couldn't coach. They absolutely could, and did, and won a lot.

Okay, that is a good one. Personally, I like this one better. And I think it works well here.

That was a tough read. I get the sense that winning solves everything and it was fine until Mullen checked out after his failed NFL attempt. I think he’d be a great OC like Brian Johnson if he can check his ego at the door.

All indications say that he whiffed with Kelly and Frost and settled with Mullen. It worked until it didn’t as this job isn’t for everybody.

Mulls was the backup plan. SS wanted Kelly and Frost. It’s well known. Not sure why you’re getting bacon.

On the bright side…that cluster f of a coaching staff would’ve gotten us in the new college football playoffs in Mullen’s first 3 years.

This is all fine, except where Stricklin has a good handle on what is required to be a successful HC at the major college level and what he should have known is the makeup of Mullen. You can sign a middling professional (in any profession) because that is what is available, but you are then required to monitor more closely their progress. Way different than signing someone who has a proven record of success.

    Mullen was never Spurrier.

It was the best we could do at time. Mullen was headed to Tennessee and SS was able to get him before then…even after striking out with Kelly (who was close to coming here, but his gf didn’t like Gainesville) and Frost (who we had no shot).

I think we are talking past each other. Nothing wrong, except he never got a handle on what he had with Mullen. I never saw anything that looked remedial in getting Mullen up to speed. And what I am mostly talking about is making him can the coaches who just don't work their craft. Meyer got a pretty good team based on Zook's recruiting and Napier got a pretty limited one based on Mullen.

I never said Meyer, just Mullen and he wasn’t Utahs OC, do it wasn’t his offense that was bright here. It was Mike Stanfords O. My Mullen bias isn’t recent, I didn’t like his spin the wheel play calling then. Very predictable, superior talent.

And they don't win the Natty w/o Tebow as a back-up.

Can't imagine Spurrier had any respect for Mullen or Mac. I hope Stricklin and Napier listen to him.
