Yeah. I have been fortunate and have never had to apply for unemployment but iirc, it is not available to those that choose to leave work voluntarily. And that seems to fit the definition of striking workers.

edit: and it seems to place the power of the state onto one side of what are private and legal contracts.

Stupid. Union dues are meant to be supplement and helping striking members. All employers are paying into the fund, but a chosen few get the benefits for striking? This is a dumb solidarity move of a too far government intervention with the media and entertainment. I guess the governement is worried that hurt screen actor guild members aren’t blowing money at the local coffee shop while others are working 2 jobs and trying to keep their kids in school. Urgh!!!

If you have to ask, then you may be the problem.

I've seen this proposed before. It is HORRIBLE policy. Seems firms/industries affected by the strike could sue. If they'd pursue something this terrible, why not reimburse the firms for lost profits?

They are the richest state in the union. They should be able to pay workers to go on strike.

    Not OP, but

    - they weren’t terminated.
    - they aren’t unemployed. They are refusing to work
    - they may already have strike benefits via the union
    - the fact that they can not work (strike ) and get paid creates an incentive to not work (strike)
    - employers and/or government/taxpayers have to bear the cost employees going on strike.
    - the unemployment fund is already in deficit.

This proposed legislation is only 2nd in stupidity to a previously proposed CA wealth tax that would tax former residents for the rest of their lives even if they left CA.

If there is any good news here, it is “a group” of Democrats and it was previously proposed in 2019 and didn’t pass even when they had a surplus.

I sometimes get a kick out of union bs. I once worked in a union company. I was a non union worker, I got a laugh out of one of the unions. Most of the plant was under the teamsters union but a small portion that made glass bottles were under the glass blowers union. When the glass blowers went on strike the teamsters walked out and backed them up. When the teamsters went on strike the glass blowers most of who made twice the pay the teamsters members made said screw you guys we aren't giving up our paycheck to help your strike and refused to walk out.......I thought it was funny as hell, union members not so much.

Is the state going to subsidize the company for lost profits as well? Why is the state taking sides in this dispute?

But they are the richest state, which invariably means they should be able to afford it. California should institute UBI at $8k per month and get it over with.

Strike pay is supposedly one of the things union dues are supposed to be used for.

So if you live in an HOA that has an average income of $350k and average home price at $2.7 million, by all accounts a rich HOA, and your underwear model neighbor decides he doesn’t have to work, are you and the rest of your rich neighbors obligated to provide for him through your HOA dues?

When libs and cons agree on a rare subject, as many do on this one, take note of the few that still don't agree and remember who you are dealing with in future arguments. :D
