“The caricature of the city is pretty accurate. There really were drugs and homeless people everywhere. Almost every block is covered in graffiti. I would walk down roads only to find piles of trash and abandoned encampments lurking around the corner. I knew it was bad, but had no idea it was this bad.”

Not good. Seattle is a great city. From another story on this topic:

“Seattle has also partially moved away from traditional sweeps, which clear tents and encampments without providing reasonable alternative accommodations. In many large-scale encampment removals along state rights of way and parts of downtown, most people living there moved inside.

And elected officials have backed measures aimed at making services more effective. Staffing levels at homelessness organizations have begun to rebound from crisis levels during the pandemic. Service providers say they were able to increase wages by pairing aggressive fundraising with increases tied to inflation in contracts from Seattle and King County.”

Here’s why people think Seattle will reverse course on homelessness – The Seattle Times

I have seen a number of threads about homelessness. It’s sad. What are people doing about it in your communities?

    Solutions.

I lived in the Seattle area from 2007 - 2010. Visited last year over the summer...and it's the exact same city I remember. Only difference? Since weed has been legalized, the smell is more obvious. Still, walking down the streets of Seattle, the smell isn't as bad as it is in Vegas in my opinion.

We also visited the University of Washington campus while we were there, and my daughter fell in love. Ultimately, she decided to start the U of Arizona today, because even with a scholarship, UW was about 2.5X more expensive. Not to mention, for roughly the price of a roundtrip airline ticket, she got a parking permit at UA and is only about a 2 hour drive from home.

Seattle is a great city. Yes, it has a homeless issue, but what city has solved this crisis?

You just outed yourself as a proponent of homelessness.
Maybe you are desensitized to the issue.

Definitely a city I'd like to visit that I haven't yet. Highs in the 70s and lows in the 50s would be a nice break from our heat dome.

No one is more of an expert on Seattle than agenda driven right wingers who never lived there. Very livable city that is experiencing high real estate prices from being an awesome place to live but they have an issue in air quality due to fires and crime is on the rise. They definitely screwed up their police department.

Homelessness isn’t fixed anywhere as noted above. Would be great to debate homelessness solutions instead of right wing nut points.

Queue up the “communist” and “socialist” labels from aforementioned nuts.

Seattle still ranks high — No. 8 in the country — for overall well-being, meaning that people report they like living here, Thorsby said.

    • But other factors negatively affected Seattle's score, including low resilience to extreme weather events, crime and poor air quality, she said. (The latter is likely driven by wildfire smoke, which caused Seattle to have some of the worst air quality in the world for a short time last summer.)

Seattle 2023 sounds like a great place to drive through…instead of drive to.

For #2- scoop them up and put them in a state institution. Screw their rights. If they're not right in the head, they need help.
    # 6- pick them up off the streets and take them to a large warehouse that has two doors. Door 1 - rehab(1 shot deal, relapse is an automatic door 2) Door 2 - all the fentanyl laced drugs(same stuff they would get on the street) you want for free until you die.

#4- every middle to large city is a trash dump. Work for housing camp. Offer a roof, cot and 2 meals a day in exchange for 8 hrs cleaning up the city. trash, graffiti etc. If they refuse, they get door #2.

So, there is nothing to do about homelessness? Good to know your position.

I appreciate the suggestions. I’d support something a little less draconian. Drugs are really hard to cure though… many don’t want to be helped so it makes it very difficult.

For starters close the border to prevent all these illegal migrants coming in and using up all the resources.
Or we could have used a lot of the money we've been wasting in Ukraine just for starters

Arguably none. But few have fallen as precipitously as has Seattle. Certainly SF and Portland come to mind.

I don't think it's difficult. I have little sympathy for addicts. That is why I say give them what they want. Let them kill themselves(overdose). Cheaper to cremate then rehab.

Solid campaign tagline. Even better with the typo - unless you’re suggesting to rehab ashes? You guys should really run things.
