Chicago Democratic alderwoman Maria Hadden asked gang members to refrain from shootouts between 9 a.m. and 9 p.m. to reduce the risk to people "not involved in high-risk activities."

"If people know that after a certain hour, the likelihood of them being shot by an unknown and unprovoked assailant is at a higher risk, they will be less likely to be out and about, and they may become more proactive with the supervision of their children, Atkins added. "When those who live a certain lifestyle try to hang with 'regular' class citizens, they put everyone at risk."

In other words, when nighttime hits, the city turns into the Purge, and all Hell is allowed to break loose.

Local Chicago gang leaders have sent a counter proposal back to the city asking for the timeframe to be extended from 3pm through 9am, making the argument that “once the kids are out of school, they are fair game.” Both sides are still fleshing out the details and expect a verbal agreement soon.

 

Can see why people think it's silly since those involved in street crime aren't going to heed such a plea, but there is an underlying logic.

There is less of a likelihood that innocent people will be shot because most people are not out and about at night, in particular, in high crime neighborhoods.

Also, wanting parents to be more proactive in supervising teen children who might be more at risk to be involved in crime and violence because they put others at risk is not exactly some novel idea...but it makes sense.

Curious though, when rw types stop liking lifestyle arguments as a criticism?

So by your standards it is alright for me to deck Nancy Pelosi as long as I do it between the hours of 9 AM and 9 PM. We just set certain hours that violence is OK, I like it.

I suspect the community group that came up with the idea thought simply saying "everyone be good, no one use a gun" had no chance of working. So they came up with this, hoping the focus on protecting kids.
Kind of like having a diet plan for obese people rather than saying "Quit eating anything unhealthy."
