This is interesting, because one of the main advantages Tesla has on paper over other EV’s is its 300-400 mile range. Where some of the other high end ones have everything else going for them, but are struggling to breach 300 miles (some disappointingly in the lower 200’s).

You’d think if they were lying about that extra 50-100 miles, some sort of review or consumer sites would figure that out pretty quickly or even get a class action suit going? Maybe all of them are overhyping their real world range, kind of like cell phones never seem to last nearly as long as their claimed battery life.

You would think that if Musk were going to lie about the mileage, he would do it in a more clever way than to switch from one mode (lying) to the other mode (telling the truth) instantaneously. He could have programmed the switch to occur gradually between 75% and 25%, and most people would never know, unless they documented mileage driven versus percent full (which few would do).

 

Other than in the Nissan Leaf, the battery packs last longer than that. I do not know where you are getting 10 years from. Federal law requires them to be warrantied to retain 70% of original capacity for 8 years/100K miles.

I keep reading about how the old automakers are going to turn it on and destroy Tesla. It reminds me of an investment I made years ago. Amazon was becoming big and was starting to sell everything. Well you know who else sold everything sears did. And amazons website is really just the old sears catalog writ large. Sears could have crushed Amazon if they had the foresight and leadership. What they had was inertia to do the thing they had done for so long. It took 20 years more for sears to die. I think Chrysler will die. I wonder who will be the Walmart that survives and grows.

 

The video was interesting, but a lot of speculation. Here is an article two months newer, where they are still speculating as to what Tesla might do.

In post #16 I praised Tesla's advancements in electric motors and I have no doubt they are "working on something." That is, however, a far cry from having a working prototype and a release date for production...dates Tesla is notoriously bad at keeping. I genuinely hope it is the game changer you are expecting, but I'd still like to see it in actual production before giving them the genius award.

I never said EV batteries were not expensive....they are, but failure is not common (other than the Leaf.) There are also options to replacement. Individual cells that have gone bad can be identified and replaced at a fraction of the cost. Electrified Garage has opened such a facility in Ocala, of all places.

Miles driven per year is not as critical as the age of the battery, the effectiveness of its thermal management system and the type of charging the owner does. Heat is the absolute killer of EV batteries..that is why Leafs struggle, they effectively have no thermal management. Most modern manufacturers have very robust systems in place to maintain optimum battery temperature. Too frequent use of superchargers will degrade the battery...charging causes heat and the faster you charge something the more heat is generated. EV batteries don't like to be too deeply discharged, either.

 

Not sure if I agree with this article or not, but it's an interesting rant.

A few years ago, my building replaced all of its elevators. I live in lower Manhattan, and the three cars that served our 17-story, full-city-block building were not moving people along fast enough. The new elevators were supposed to solve this, using algorithms. The installation was slow, spread out over the early pandemic, but eventually it was completed (in 2021, I think; pandemic time all runs together). And the elevators are noticeably worse. They often go by you when you call them, they somehow create new chokepoints, and often I find myself taking the stairs up to the 10th floor instead. I call this phenomenon the “Tesla syndrome,” and it’s a sign of capitalism not working anymore.

Forget the actual digital stuff in those cars. Think about how they look, the message they send, and the way they’re designed in regular old meatspace. They’re ugly, like a third-rate graphic designer was asked to imagine what a “science fiction car” looks like and given some copies of Amazing Stories! From the 1950s. Their uber-large screens are digital, but the size and placement is a design decision, and it’s a notoriously bad one. They’re distracting, and they don’t ultimately serve the underlying self-driving function. (Car manufacturers more generally are pulling back from the all-digital approach to the dash.)

And then there are the handles. Tesla door handles are flush with the side of the car—genius! Except that this is the opposite of the vaunted efficiency and optimization these cars stand for. You have to tap the handle first, and only then can you use it. This contradicts the very idea of the handle, a technology so old we barely think of it as a technology at all. It’s hard to understand how we got to a place where “efficiency” is adding an extra step to using a car door handle.

This situation is the Tesla syndrome, and it’s everywhere. “Innovation” all too often makes everything worse. Ubers are often more expensive than taxis now. Streaming services that once offered us infinite movies now force us all to watch Suits. Information markets that were supposed to distribute goods and money more equitably by means of the market alone have led to unprecedented inequality. Management consultants using the “innovation Bible” have suggested that a major university replace all its language classes with subscriptions to DuoLingo. Twitter is now “X.” Tweets are now “posts.”

Reminds me of the courthouse in Orlando. It has these small kiosk like stands where you enter your desired floor number. It then assigns you to an elevator. The elevators do not have regular floor buttons. I laugh every time I go over there about the thought process that went into that design decision.

 

I ordered a Rivian R1S a couple months ago. They claim mid to high 300s with the dual motor. Anyone have any experience with a Rivian?

 

Those systems are frequently used in elevators in towers and work quite well.

 

I have a Launch Edition R1S quad motor with AT tires so I don’t get that much range but it’s great. I don’t think many dual motor versions have been made yet.

 

I test drove the quad motor last week and the rep was pushing the dual motor build if I wasn't in need of everything the quad offers. Quad vs dual and black vs green interior are my biggest challenges right now. I'm doing graphite with he black 22's and they had a few there in Dallas and they all had black interior. I'd like to be slightly different. I also like the silver badging offered with the dual motor.
