I went Aldi and a bunch of the carts had the chain somehow plugged into the cart so they were all lose and free to go.

I used to find that irritating however paying almost twice as much for many products at Publix is worse. As stated before, you feel ripped off by publix and company once you discover Aldi. Now I'm not sure how people solely use Aldi because they are hit or miss on items and their produce doesn't seem to last however, using them to supplement your groceries will save you a lot. We no longer use Publix except for a very select few items. The rest is a combination of Aldi, and BJ/wal mart curbside pickups along with a local produce mart Perines. We don't drive out of the way for any of them except for BJs which is for bulk dry goods every so often. It's not exaggeration to say we spend half what we would if we only shopped at Publix.

Yeah, I've never shooed there but I have heard about how inexpensive their food is. That's major plus, IMHO.

Yes. At the one I went to mostly, they required a quarter for years, but then stopped. So perhaps it's a thing of the past. I suspect their rationale is that if they can get their customers to push the cart back in, they don't have to staff for parking lot cart pushers. It also keeps the parking lot free of the random cart clutter when folks leave their carts against a bumper in the lot or right in the middle of a parking space in many cases!!

In my opinion you have to learn how to use them. Knock off brand shopping is a bit of a shock for people married to name brands. In most cases their knockoff brands are great and I'd challenge people to taste a difference in things like their breads, canned goods, dairy and snack foods. Some things are off and their greek yogurt knock off is a hard pass for me unless we buy it as a base to make dip. All I'd say is if you try it, give it more than one chance because you really can save a lot.

When someone does leave a cart out in the lot, I think another customer is pretty quick to grab it

Yep, that too. It's not a terrible system, at all. Ever have any freshness issues with the produce? I would have that issue every now and then back in the day at the Aldi I went to. In fact, I know of a few discount grocers and that to me, was how they kept their prices so low....the produce was always dated, among other things. YMMV.

I know what you mean. I went to Publix down the street the other week and found they were all out of name brand paper towels so I bought an off brand paper towel and wow... I got the towel damp and that thing smelled like wet dog... PU... Never again will I mess with discount off brand paper products.

It is hit or miss. Have definitely fine tuned our process over time with trial and error. Paper goods is why we use bulk stores like Sam's or BJs and not aldi or publix.

You shopping at Winn Dixie seems apt.
I kind of always suspected it.

You might save some cash, but you might catch something as well.

Wonder if I'm going to lose my Winn Dixie dumpster contract? Anyone know a higher up at Aldi :)

Honestly, I wouldn't be that sad. Grocery stores and Mexican restaurants produce very heavy trash. They ain't that profitable.

Id rather get poisoned at Winn Dixie than go into an Aldi. I am not a fan. Almost all weird no name brands and I like consistency in what is at a store and where it is. Aldi is like somone sets up a new store each week and randomizes the locations.

I like Aldi. Cheap avacodos and cheap live yogurt cups. I also don’t mind their cheap bagels. Honestly though all grocery store bagels suck.

A few times the grapes weren't what they should be, not what Publix would have sold. But usually fine, and $1 a pound or so cheaper. We've been on a pineapple binge lately, they tend to be well over a $1 less and are fine.
Mandis are often a little larger and plumper at Publix, but $2 more ...

There are definitely many things more depressing in life than walking into a huge grocery store during the middle of the day, with only 5 or 6 customers inside, but... it's up there.
