New College continues its place as a home to right-wing political figures who have no expertise in running a school. But they're getting compensated well to be completely incompetent. David Rancourt joins New College as Dean of Students There are many terrible features of the DeSantis regime. One of those terrible features is using the government to enrich his pals, crony capitalism run amuck.
But their Hacky-sac team is a juggernaut and they traditionally have a respectable ultimate frisbee team.
They actually hired a respected baseball guy in Mario Jimenez who has experience in coaching college baseball and also with USA Baseball. Currently the school will compete NAIA with the ceiling probably being DIII down the road. Again, the issue with New College is that for a normal student, there is no real college experience. The campus is in a nice location in Sarasota but the buildings and many other parts of campus are run down. It will be a tough go for the athletic teams for the same reason New College has an high acceptance rate of over 70%…the average college student will have no real desire to attend the school.
Yep, having enough classes to actually complete your degree and major is one of those real college experiences. And, not only will students not have a real desire to attend the school, they lack the ability to realistically do so.
IMO, that would be why New College has struggled with enrollment for years. But the people who choose to go there really seem to love it and its culture. Very dumb to bring in a bunch of incompetent ideologues to destroy what makes it unique (and run the college poorly to boot) when you can't really resolve the issues that make it an abnormal college experience.
My undergraduate, alma mater, Binghamton University, agreed to take any New College students in good standing at the same cost that they have at New College. If I was a New College student, I would jump all over that offer, although it’s probably too late to do it for the fall semester. I would say drop out of school, work for a semester, and then head to Binghamton University, or to one of the other public universities in Florida.
Didn't even see this until now. What a hypocritical douchebag: New College of Florida embraces affirmative action for men
Man, that’s depressing to think about. My father went to UF, I went, our son went … wife’s side is all fsu, daughters went … The state universities have been part of our lives forever …
I was a third-generation Gator. One of my siblings also went to UF. I love the university. But with the way DeSantis and his cronies continue to launch attack after attack on higher ed and try to assert more and more control over what is taught, I wouldn't encourage people to go there right now. It's not a healthy situation, nor one where academic freedom and free speech are valued.
I wouldn't either or allow my kids to attend, not that either of them wanted to at the time. I wonder what all this is going to do to UF's application pool.
It’s having very little impact. UF, at its cost, and with the depth of the students that go there, is not going to hurt in any material way in the short term. It’s too hard to pass up. And, think about it. Most of the kids don’t care too much about the politics, anyway. But long term, of the professorial and researching brain drain picks up momentum and is sustained, the ranking will plummet, employers will drop it as a top recruiting base, and quality enrollment will accordingly suffer. And I’m not saying anything that is controversial. UF WILL SUFFER long term unless the madness is stopped. Moreover, of UF suffers, so too will FSU, UCF, USF, FAU and FIU. Hopefully, a sound beating of DeSantis this year in the primaries will cause those in charge to re-focus education to the priorities of educating and not indoctrinating a platform of Hate.
Populism rarely ends well. Rufo seeking recommendations for the right kind of professors via Xitter. New College is a warning about the price of populist incompetence As the new semester starts, New College is an administrative disaster. One third of faculty have gone. Students cannot find classes. Students with housing contracts are being relocated to an airport hotel. The mismanagement of the New College is entirely predictable. It is a product of the DeSantis school of public management. Experienced administrators were pushed out. They were replaced by political cronies. The new President is a former GOP House speaker, who was handed a salary more than double than that of his predecessor. The new Dean of Students is a lobbyist. Trustees were selected for their ideological leanings rather than experience.
Would you want to risk DeSantis putting a Randy Fine or Richard Corcoran in charge of your university and stacking your board of trustees with people like Chris Rufo and Hllsdale/Claremont hacks? Not if I have better options. I'd want to be in a place that promotes free speech and academic freedom.
