I guess I could have accomplished the same results by running from the cops.

I’ve said it a thousand times. When a cop gives you directions, obey, be polite and 99.9% of the time things will turn out for the best. This morning this advice worked so well for me that even I was surprised. I was eastbound on SR 436 approaching the 436/Red Bug rd flyover when a car cut into my lane. I got a bit confused and made a very bad error. I turned into a lane that put me going the wrong way into the intersection. When I saw the white arrow in the middle of the street pointing in my direction I thought “Oh shit, I’m going the wrong way down the wrong lane of one of the busiest intersections in Central Florida.

Thankfully I was able to slow down and maneuver onto Winter Park dr where I belonged. As I left the intersection I heard a Police siren and knew he would be coming for me. I pulled safely into a parking lot. I realized I wasn’t wearing my seatbelt so I figured the best way not to get caught for that too was to get out of the car before he got there.

He pulled up behind me and said “get back in the car”. I quickly obeyed, then I told him that I knew what I had done and was very sorry. He then asked for my license and registration and after a quick “Yes Sir” I opened the glove box. While I got the registration & license I apologized again and briefly explained how when the other car changed lanes on me I screwed up and turned into the turn lane by mistake. He answered “Yes sir I saw what happened, you were still in the wrong” I told him I knew and I understand I put a lot of lives in danger going through that intersection. Then I said “I’m sorry, just write me a ticket I know I was wrong.”

Here is the surprise, he answered, “I’m not one who likes to write tickets. I am going to go back and check your driving record, wait here”. He came back and said he saw I had not had a violation in 20 years so he was not going to write me a ticket, then he said “By the way your driver's side brake light is out, get it fixed.”

The moral of the story is, be polite, do what the cop says and he is not going to taze you, shoot you or drag your ass out of the car.

Seriously though, I should have gotten a ticket, I was very lucky I didn't kill someone going through that intersection, the lucky thing is all the lights were red except a left turn light and there was only one car in that lane. Once he passed I was able to slowly exit the intersection.

You mean you didn't run around your car to get away from him after you had just beaten up your ex-girlfriend who already had a DVO against you?

Go ahead, you can say it. I know I am an OLD white guy.
Really though think of the videos we have watched where if the guy had only done what he was told he would be here today. (black guys, brown guys, white guys it really doesn't matter)

White guys don't get shot by the police, except for the times that they do.

Those 2 black guys who were brutalized by the Goon Squad in Mississippi should’ve taken OPs advice and tried being more polite to police…maybe being polite and respectful would’ve stopped the cops from shoving an object into their behinds and shooting them in the mouth.

If you read a story about a cop shooting someone who got out of his car immediately after getting pulled over would you put the blame on the cop for having an itchy trigger finger or would you blame the victim for not just staying in his car?

on your hypo, and nothing more…100% the cop. But your hypo only happens when the facts get washed through social media and mainstream media….Kill the Cops!

People should be polite. But people do not have to give up their rights or explain themselves to police as some virtue signaling display of deference. Quite the opposite, you can be respectful and respect "the law" while not being complicit in giving up your rights. You got out of a jam this time, but that doesn't mean if there is a next time it will work--and it certainly doesn't mean your N=1 experience demonstrates that others will have the same experience.

I would think you could have just thrown your seat belt on and stayed in the car?

I do think it's pretty far fetched that any cop would shoot in that scenario but I found that part of the story interesting because sometimes people just do weird things because they're nervous.

I had more interaction when I was younger but I never had any trouble with the police. How much because I was polite, how much because I was an educated white guy ... I don't know.
"Hello officer, is it OK to hitchhike here?"
"Nope, it's not legal anywhere in the state. But if you walk right past that next exit, you'll have a better chance of a ride."
"Thanks (for not looking in my boot) and have a nice day."

If a cop shoot somebody because the cop is nervous, without more, the cop is 100% at fault. If the cop thinks he sees a gun or something that puts his life or others in peril, that’s a whole different story. But that wasn’t the hypothetical.

Sorry I meant more 51 getting out of the car or just generally people who were pulled over doing something that could be considered "not complying" when really they were just nervous.

I wasn't trying to make a cops are bad point. I have a lot of respect for cops and what they do mainly because I wouldn't want to do that job.

The interesting thing to meis what 51 is putting forward as an example of following the cop's directions could have resulted in someone being killed in slightly different circumstances. If someone were to start to get out of the car, and their timing was poor such that the cop was getting close to the vehicle, it's conceivable the cop could have felt threatened, couldn't see his hands, etc.

In that situation I'd be willing to bet we'd see a few "this wouldn't have happened if he just stayed in the car" responses.
