Well I think with military training you would get better trigger control. Too many cops are so scared they pull their gun and discharge before assessing the situation.

Interesting. I hope more people see the obvious contradictions between "more cops on the street" and wanting a higher quality police force.

    Another level-headed post head.
It’s a complicated issue for sure.
I try to show respect to cops any chance I get. I’ve bought coffee or whatever they were in line to buy for cops on numerous occasions.
They like teachers, need to feel appreciated by the public.
    It’s a very difficult job.

Exactly. It is unfair to expect police to be family therapists or to deal with those suffering from severe mental disease if weapons or violence is not apparant.

It's insane. You got "Karens" calling cops if the neighbor's lawn mower depth of cut does not satisfy the Karen next door.

I support efforts to de-escalate situations by having a different tier of response by different authority. Guns don't solve everything.

I harken back to that poor disabled man that was shot while sitting down by police. I think he suffered from schizophrenia. That was horrible.

Officer for second Mississippi department implicated in alleged torture, shooting and attempted sexual assault of two men | CNN

A second Mississippi law enforcement department says that one of its officers was “implicated” in an incident of alleged torture, shooting and attempted sexual assault of two men in police control.

Richland Police Department says Officer Joshua Hartfield, who was off duty at the time of the incident, has resigned, according to an open letter from the chief of the department.

    "...hell during prison time..."

Have you heard anything about them being criminally charged and prosecuted? Bc I haven't.

Fired is nothing against the allegations.

    Straight up criminal.

Everyone 'implicated' should be in jail, no bond, pending trial.

Didn’t they just come out with the accusations less than 2 weeks ago.
Do we now arrest people based on accusations alone?

Thus the reason I said, if this holds up.

I refer you to to the last episode of True Detectives when Russ sees something in his moments near death and questions his preconceived fatalistic cynicism.

Home sapiens are not a mistake, but it's important to put into context our meteoric rise to apex predator on Earth. Every apex predator before us took millions of years to become the dominant species, giving sufficient time for the world and environment to adapt along with those select species and achieve equilibrium within their environments.

Humans rose to the top in a blip, at most 70K years based on current discoveries. Additionally, the nature of our existence and dominance is about social and cognitive strength, not physical prowess, meaning that our evolution can happen faster but is likely more prone to erratic aberrations as a result of that speed of change. Previous dominant species were ruled entirely by their genetic code and desire to survive/procreate. We are the first species shown to be capable of putting those genetic imperatives on a back burner to focus on stories, myths, or other imagined truths of higher powers (company brands, sports team loyalty, government, religion, etc.)

I agree with davis that the arc of our development as a species will likely trend closer to harmony over time, but not without major upheavals in the future. That's assuming that we don't cause such environmental disharmony in the shorter term that we erase our chance to improve as a species.

That was the lawsuit. This happened in January.

During the January 24 incident, deputies “forced their entry into the premises from several entry points without a warrant,” and with no “reasonable suspicion or probable cause” for entering the home, the lawsuit said.

One of the victims had to go to the hospital because his tongue was shot off and his jaw shattered. That's some pretty good evidence that something happened. If a civilian had put a gun and someone's mouth and pulled the trigger, I bet the police would have found and arrested them by now, but since it's an officer that allegedly did it, they get the benefit of being covered for by the police and DA.

Do cops ordinarily wait until they have a prosecutable case to arrest, or probable cause?

    Because this:

"...Despite their compliance, deputies “placed their guns to the heads of both handcuffed men and threatened to kill them.”

As the assault reached its peak, the lawsuit alleges, a deputy placed a gun in Jenkins’ mouth and shot him, lacerating his tongue and shattering his jaw.

After Jenkins was shot, “he was severely injured, left alone to care for and treat himself as he stumbled out the door and fell,” the suit says...."

...sounds an awful lot like 'probable cause' to me.

(and that's aside from the allegations of torture, sexual abuse, unlawful imprisonment, and a shit pile of other felonies that were asserted).

Tasers, taunts, torment: What we know about the hours of horror 2 Black men suffered at the hands of a self-described 'Goon Squad' | CNN

Good lord ... this story was updated with more details ... absolutely sickening...

The two black men were staying in the house legally as care takers, but a white neighbor thought it was suspicious.

The cops texted each other instructions on how to illegally, with no warrant, kick in the doors and to avoid security camera, not to injure their faces so they wouldn't have bad mug shots ... the black men didn't resist at all... but still ... the story includes tell them to stay out of their white area, and go back to the black town, assaulting them sex toys, pouring various liquids down their throats and over their heads and body, then this ... tazing and shooting the guy for no reason at all...

Dedmon, Middleton, Hartfield and Elward then began to tase the two men repeatedly to see “which (Taser) was the most powerful,” the document said. Elward’s Taser was discharged eight times; Hartfield’s five; and Dedmon’s four.

Elward removed a bullet from his gun, forced Jenkins onto his knees and put the gun into his mouth. Elward fired the gun, which did not discharge.

He racked the slide, put the gun back in Jenkins’ mouth and pulled the trigger again.

The bullet lacerated Jenkins’ tongue, broke his jaw and went out through his neck.

Then the cops got together and made up a story that they just happened to find lots of drugs outside the house, and chased one of the men into the house, where they shot him. It included the idea of planting a "throw down gun" that these officers apparently keep in their car to plant on people... good to know this so common they have a name for it ... "throw down gun" ...then stealing the hard drive out of the home surveillance camera system.

Edit: Article said they pleaded to federal charges earlier.

Either way, they ****ed themselves and should get a well-deserved just deserts. Authorities will almost certainly keep them outside the general population while in the clink, whether it's state or federal.

Rankin County taxpayers also gonna have to cough up a lot of money when the civil case gets settled.

I suppose all the cases they worked on will be reviewed now? A rogue cop or two is one thing. A gang of six is even more concerning. Did others know what these guys were doing?

I’d assume fine combing every case these Neanderthals were involved in is what’s going to happen.

This “Goon Squad” was apparently a group that existed within the department to handle certain situations…I’m pretty sure folks in the department knew about its existence but willfully ignored it.

I’m also curious about the “Karen” neighbor that called the cops in the first place.

Never any consequences for those people.

The John Crawford Walmart shooting still angers me to this day

Well when you give a name to your criming as "The Goon Squad," ya gotta think: not a one-off event.

If this was a lineup of random people with one cop mixed in, it's definitely the guy in the top right. You know 'em when you see 'em.
