Shameful that they would drive away their best and brightest, but unfortunately not surprising. Crazy conservatives have taken over Idaho and are shaping it in their own image.

Teacher of the Year was supposed to be an honor. Then politics intervened. - The Boston Globe

WASHINGTON — When Karen Lauritzen was named the 2023 Idaho Teacher of the Year last September, she was hoping it would be her best school year yet. Instead, she said, it turned out to be one of the worst in her two decades teaching — and, she decided by the summer, her last.

Despite her selection by a Republican administration after a rigorous application process, her nomination was met with attacks on her character from conservative outlets in the state, accusing her of “promoting transgenderism” and being a “left-wing activist,” smears that carried into her fourth-grade classroom in the form of sudden suspicions about her from parents in her school.

Lauritzen, 44, is still the reigning teacher of the year, but she is no longer teaching elementary school or even living in Idaho. Instead she is taking her talents to a university in Illinois, a long-considered career move hastened by the experience.

“I should have felt celebrated and should have felt like this is a great year, and honestly it was one of the toughest years I have ever had teaching, not only with my community but with parents questioning every decision I made as well,” Lauritzen said. “Even after 21 years of teaching, my professional judgment was called into question more this year than it ever has in the past.”

There is little wonder there is a teacher shortage across the country. Disheartening to me. Teachers were so important to me and my life growing up. At 68 I can still remember every one of my elementary teachers.

Stuff like this will just accelerate the right / left sort by location going on. It becomes impossible to live with and around people who have different cultural values, because everybody wears them on their sleeve these days.

Thanks for sharing, phil. I found it sad but not surprising the extent to which certain states (including blue states) encourage/require their Teacher of the Year to speak out on behalf of their political education policies. Then there's GA, which squelches political speech of their TOtY.

I’m more curious about what specifics there are regarding the allegations.
Were they based in any facts or was it just crazy nonsense.

As usual more details are needed..

I think a not-so-secret part of tyranny is beheading the people you consider to be your opposition. ;)

The "specifics" were that people found her personal social media and decided to attack her based on her personal political views that were at no point part of her class. That and she dared to teach the children that the United Nations exists.

yep. & that is really messed up. Idaho which in ways is 1 of my fav states is really becoming a shithole of people who have it all & yet are being cheated out of good life by their delusions of oppression. Who, are, in turn, screwing up others' lives with their nonsense. It's sad, but they are victims, but victims of their gullibility & doomy fantasies.

The details are there is you chose to read the article. On her social media she had expressed pro lgbtq and blm views, but no evidence has been given that these were introduced in the classroom. Outlets like this piled on

    https://www.actionidaho.org/post/le...f-the-year-by-idaho-s-department-of-education

    And then parents freak out.

Teachers have every right to post on social media including their views. But it’s a bad idea, for multiple reasons. I know some teachers just don’t do it.

You link an article written by a very liberal writer, published in a very liberal paper, which is so one sided, and completely devoid of facts concerning the controversy which is the subject matter of the chief complaint of the article. The only thing missing from the article to make it a perfect lefty opinion piece is a reference to the racist Orange man.

The Boston Globe clusters center-left with high integrity.

The writer mentioned issues in Massachusetts and CA, where more liberal policies were in play. Did you not read the article? Do you have any thoughts about the story?
