Love the pushback. I honestly cannot call the team by it’s new name. Let’s all come back to the middle and put this dumbass name out of its misery.
I think this was another example of libbies gone wild.

"We invite all Americans to stand up for the dignity of EVERY AMERICAN under assault in today’s increasingly nonsensical culture wars" the petition says. "This ‘LINE IN THE SAND’ moment reinforces undeniable history of the NATIVE AMERICAN assisting the FOUNDING OF AMERICA, with NATIVE AMERICAN principles used by the FOUNDING FATHERS in the US Constitution -- and, EVERY AMERICAN's right to the 1st and 14th Amendment and not to be targets of cancel culture or ESG. This is not a simple left or right issue for Americans; it reaches across the political spectrum dating back to our Founding Fathers.

Why do you even care? Aren't you guys supposed to be boycotting the NFL?

I don’t care too much. I guess it’s just another symptom that libbies hold the cards and push their weight around too much. It’s vexing.

Like everyone else Native Americans are not a monolithic block. I thinks it’s a racist derogatory term. My three friends who have native blood agree with me. I don’t have a dog in this hunt but changing back would be silly at this point. Maybe they can wear their throwback jerseys every once in a while.

The Native American Guardian Association is a fringe organization. It's only been around a for a relatively short time and the reason for its existence seems to be preserving traditional Native American/Indian names for athletic teams and mascots. That being said the current name of the teams sucks and in my opinion a reasonable compromise would be renaming the team "Warriors". Unlike the original name which is essentially a racial epithet, the "Warriors" implies courage and nobility and would not be offensive like "Redskins". By adopting the nickname "Warriors" the team could also return to its original Native American logo and fight song with the substitution of "Warriors" for "Redskins" in both the title and the lyrics.

I used to hate the Braves, but ever since MLB took the All-Star game from them (through ZERO fault of their own) and ripped that patch off those boys uniforms, they get my support. Braves winning the 2021 World Series was the ultimate middle finger to MLB and corporate wokeism. I don't follow the Braves front office, but I hope there are no plans to change the team name. Based on how super efficiently they operate their franchise, I'm guessing they won't. That was Redskins downfall... shitty ownership and management.

There are several Indian tribes located where I live. I asked one of the Chiefs of one of the local tribes about it, he really had no problem with the Indians or the Braves nicknames, he did say the Redskins was border line but he wouldn't make a fuss to change it.

I don't follow the Redskins (Commanders) much at all, so I don't know what they do before games, etc. But it always felt to me like Braves fans were celebrating Native American heritage and I would think that is the same for any team who takes on Native Americans as their mascot. Just a matter of time before "Patriots" becomes offensive. Were they really patriots??

I was at a Rays/Braves game earlier this year. I don't have an issue with Braves as a name, but I can't stand that Seminole chop they do. Seeing thousands of White people doing that chant seems to mock native American culture if you ask me.

'Patriot' already is offensive because right-wingers have turned it into their version of 'comrade', as a way of separating the true Americans from the rest of us.

The All Star game wasn't removed from Atlanta to protest the team name of the Braves it was removed as a protest against a restrictive voting law enacted by the Georgia state legislature.

I think this is highlighting the problem we keep running into: who decides? You queried the chief of a local tribe. Dan is looking to his Native American friends. Bluke is going with the opinion of The Native American Guardian Association. And I think it would be fair to say that most of us give a pretty good nod to our own gut feelings on such subjects. And rarely will all these sources agree.

When it comes to the nickname of a sports team, I don’t think the outcome really matters, but this question is central to many of our more important issues as well.

How is changing the name from Redskins to Commanders an example of 'cancel culture?'

Or is this an example of 'cancel culture?'

Attended the Carolina Panthers vs. Washington Commanders game in Charlotte last season. Washington fans were there, in force, and they were cheering for the “Redskins” and sporting Redskins paraphernalia.

Imagine still being mad about this lol. Pretty sure actual fans of the team are feeling pretty great, considering Dan Snyder is history. If they change the name it should go back to the Washington Football Team, that was good.

The Native American Guardian Association (NAGA) has encouraged fans to sign their petition..... If the NAGA's are behind it I'm fine with it.

Growing up in S Florida, I have just a handful of friends who were born into the Florida Seminole Nation. They represent no one but themselves, but their point to me whenever this topic comes up is that names like Chiefs, Braves, Warrior, etc....were never used in a derogatory way. However, in their own experiences growing up in 1970's Florida, when people wanted to belittle them they called them "red-skins". To them, that one name alone would be akin to naming a football franchise the N****rs.
