Ah. So someone who isn’t actually going to be bringing the pressure. That’s a little better than my first assumption, which was that it was a Gator defensive player talking smack. That’s a bad idea in almost any scenario, but even more so when your defense has been as lamentable as ours.

As we should have, considering they were backups.

It does NOT matter which QB plays... I suspect their game plan will be to run... run some more... then run at us all night long. With an occasional risky pass play here and there.

I also suspect that they will fire-up the special teams game plan, so look for all kinds of trick plays and fakes on special teams. They have two healthy QBs left and I doubt they want to risk injuring any of them just for a few measly yards.

However... don't think for one moment that they will play vanilla football... The two best remaining QBs that they have left on scholarship can run the ball. Nate Johnson can run. He's plenty fast and the other QB, Bryson Barns, has some decent wheels too.

Nate Johnson - Football - University of Utah Athletics

Bryson Barnes - Football - University of Utah Athletics

But then again... Utah's coach, Kyle Whittingham, is a coach that lets his QBs get hit in live practice scrimmages too. So... you never know with that guy if he's suicidal or just a sucker for punishment.

Kyle Whittingham says their strength is the O-line, but he also specifies that they are not great at pass blocking, since they seem to have a weakness for end around rushers.. Pay attention coaches.

They have decent running backs and will play them by committee.

If we can stop the run and the trick plays we win this game, IMHO.

Here below is their 2022 individual player statistics...

NOTE: There are some player changes to the team this year, players that are not on the 2022 Player Statistics link below, and some added players are missing too.

Here is a more accurate list of Utah's 2023 football team's roster below.

2023 Football Roster - University of Utah Athletics

    Edited:
If Cam Rising doesn't start I expect Bryson Barns to start at QB for Utah. He has played in games last year and won a game and player in other games for Utah.

Barns, as a starter, beat Washington State and lead one critical drive in the Rose Bowl against The Ohio State University for a TD in the past, so I look for him to back up Cam or start if Cam is not up to play.

    Doing your homework.

I was pleased last year that we matched their speed and physicality. Utah deserves their tough reputation.

I think we've stepped up our size, strength and speed. Nothing would be more encouraging than to see us show superiority on those aspects.

Agreed, will be nice to keep our DL fresh this year. The article linked at the top of the page on DTs really makes this point clear, no Dexter but plenty of beef and depth up front (esp @DT).

Well... it might just be a good tactic. Have a slowed QB... we'll attack.

As most have stated there is no way Cam isn't playing. Especially after last year.

I just don't know the severity of his past injury and if it is having an impact on his game. My guess is that it won't affect it very much and he and that friggin' TE are going to hurt us again.

I know what Cam will be playing.... Cam Jackson. He is a beast And dude is gonna eat the Utah QB's alive, figuratively and quite possibly literally. And if Cam Rising plays its gonna be a Cam on Cam crime.

Yeah, I'm leaning toward the medical staff to play it safe and hold him out for precaution. He has literally done nothing but light throwing drills AND he is working on changing his throwing motion. As you stated he hasn't even tested his injured knees against evading defensive players and against a Dline like ours you don't want to ruin a kids career placing him back there while he is unable to move. So far all.anyone from Utah has expresses is Hope irt CamRising playing but not a ton of optimism from whatever read. 2 weeks away and they don't know if he can even move laterally let alone in live action at full speed.
