America has and can make stupid laws which cops can enforce violently with qualified immunity, so why are you on this thread supporting it? If the UK scenario happened to your kid, I bet you'd be pissed if the government said you couldnt sue the cops who did that.

Since removing guns from the citizenry isn't feasible or even possible, we could focus our efforts on making it better where we actually can.

Very difficult and dangerous job for lots of reasons and some of those reasons are unique to being a cop. As far as the consequences for making a mistake on the job, I think we could also discuss soldiers, pilots, engineers, and medical professionals.

On balance I’m going to agree with you. I kind of have a problem with sending a person to prison or being civilly liable for making an on the job mistake in good faith. At the same time, some of these mistakes are egregious and perhaps deserve more scrutiny.

This is a pretty poor effort.

I have never liked the status quo. I defended cops for about 3-4 years. I’ve trained cops on civil rights laws. I know what actually goes on. My best friend of 45 years was a SWAT commander. I despise bad cops. I love good cops.

I am all for reform. Long overdue. I am not for eliminating Qualified Immunity.
He literally did not respond to my items “point by point.” Numbers 1-5 weren’t “points.” My op was a question, which started with “ so ask yourself….” I literally said in the post that “bad cops” are not the topic of the thread.

The sole “point” of the thread is the question posed, which is simply asking are we heading down the path where no one wants to be cop?

a type of qualified immunity is a prerequisite to have an adequate number of police. As simple as that. No state will be able to recruit and retain sufficient law enforcement officers if you remove qualified immunity.

I agree. Bad cops need to be fired and prosecuted. F the unions. Good cops need immunity.

Cute. The problem with the comment is that the stats are based on reported crimes not arrests.

My castle ain’t much, but castle doctrine certainly applies (if me or my sons are home).

Sounds like you’d be just fine in a state without police.

Would not prefer that. My sphere of protective influence is limited. Hoping that a decent Po Po organization takes care of the bigger picture. But I recognize that the last time I called them they arrived seven minutes after the perp(s?) left.
