People Are Leaving Florida Universities Because They Feel Unwanted - The State is "Toxic" (msn.com)

Academic professionals are fleeing the state of Florida at a rapid rate, and some say it’s because they feel unwanted and unappreciated. With the start of the upcoming school year set to start in the fall, officials at New College of Florida (NCF) have revealed that they’ve been unable to fill a significant number of teaching positions. The small college typically has 100 full-time educators on campus, but a startling 64 of those positions have been left vacant this year. This ongoing problem has been considered a "brain drain" for Florida colleges.

There are a string of issues that have sent Florida educators into a tizzy. In 2023, Governor Ron DeSantis appointed six political allies to join NCF’s board of trustees. The new additions to the board have indicated a special interest in transforming the college's "woke" environment. They started by removing the college's president and replacing her with a Republican education commissioner. The state’s educators feel like they are being mistreated, as the new panel has been dismissive of the requests to institute more diversity programs and they have already denied tenure to five esteemed professors.

Educator Kenneth Nunn, who spent over 30 years working at the University of Florida's law school, has been an outspoken opponent of the state's evolving education laws. As an African American man, he chose to retire after Florida implemented a ban on teaching critical race theory, and now he’s saying that the state has become “toxic.” He added, “It has been many years since we last hired an entry-level African American faculty member. They’re just not interested in being in a place where something with the stature of critical race theory is being denigrated and attacked. I could have stayed in a place where I’m not wanted and tough it out, or I could retire and look for work elsewhere.”

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis on Wednesday suspended the top prosecutor in Orlando, saying she had neglected her duty to prosecute criminals.

“It is my duty as Governor to ensure that the laws enacted by our duly elected Legislature are followed,” DeSantis said during a news conference in Tallahassee announcing the suspension of State Attorney Monique Worrell of the 9th Judicial Circuit, which serves Orange and Osceola counties.

This is the second elected state attorney DeSantis has suspended in the past year. Last August he removed Andrew Warren, the Tampa area state attorney, from office, accusing him of neglect of duty and incompetence. Warren, who like Worrell is a Democrat, joined other prosecutors across the country in signing statements opposing criminal charges against abortion providers or women seeking abortions. He also said he wouldn’t prosecute people for providing gender-affirming health care, and his office’s policies didn’t charge people with some minor crimes.

“The people of Central Florida deserve to have a State Attorney who will seek justice in accordance with the law instead of allowing violent criminals to roam the streets and find new victims,” DeSantis said.

 

"The governor said Worrell's practices and policies have allowed suspects to avoid minimum mandatory sentences for gun crimes and drug trafficking, allowed juvenile offenders to avoid serious charges and incarceration, and limited charges for child pornography suspects."

This is an absolute abuse of his authority. The legislature creates minimum mandatories to take sentencing discretion away from the judges in certain cases and put that discretion in the hands of the local State Attorney. Now DeSantis suspends a duly elected State Attorney for exercising that discretion? The only black female State Attorney in the state, by the way.

 

Agreed. Warren still has an appeal pending in the 11th Circuit.

sad part is that desi has gained his authority with the veto pen and the covid funds. Unintended consequences of the line-item veto, the executive branch wields it as a weapon to cower the legislative branch and consolidate the authority to a single office. It takes a special kind of arrogance and corruption to push it that far but desi has no limits in pursuit of his agenda. I suspect that he is not liked by the great majority in the legislature but they fear him anyway. trump jr...but more punitive with the line-item veto authority

In April, Worrell wrote a scathing letter to media in which she said DeSantis was trying "to exploit his political agenda against" her based on her differences of opinion.

She also wrote the DeSantis "prances around Southeast Asia on his dilapidated presidential campaign tour."

 

Not valid grounds for suspending a constitutional officer in Florida. DeSantis is anti-democratic, as is anyone who continues to support him.

“We will absolutely reserve the right if they’re invading our country and killing our people,” DeSantis said when asked by a voter if he would be willing to use drones against the cartels.


When asked later by NBC News to clarify, DeSantis said, “I said I would use whatever force we need to defend the country.”

After decades of working in wealth management in New York City, he lost his job with the financial services firm UBS, where a customer — who said DiNapoli was her brother — accused him of stealing her money and forging her name on a check.

Creditors were garnishing DiNapoli’s bank accounts. His nearly 10-acre equestrian estate in Ocala was in foreclosure and his homeowners association was pursuing him for past dues. In 2017, he filed for bankruptcy.
