Survivor: Sex trafficker took all girls to Planned Parenthood (wnd.com) According to at least three studies, Planned Parenthood is one of the most common clinical settings to which sex traffickers bring their victims. Traffickers take the women and girls they abuse to Planned Parenthood because, according to the survivors, Planned Parenthood does not ask questions. In “The Health Consequences of Sex Trafficking and Their Implications for Identifying Victims in Healthcare Facilities,” researchers found that almost a third (29.6%) of human sex trafficking survivors had visited a Planned Parenthood affiliate. Former senior advisor for trafficking in persons for the U.S. Department of State, Laura J. Lederer explained, “Since pimps and traffickers generally exercise nearly complete control of their victims, these points of contact with healthcare represent rare opportunities for victim identification and intervention.” Laura, who said she was so “young” she needed “a waiver” to be examined, spoke about her time “on the street” saying, “I went to hospitals, urgent care clinics, women’s health clinics, and private doctors. No one ever asked me anything anytime I ever went to a clinic. … I was on birth control during the 10 years I was on the streets — mostly Depo-Provera shots which I got at Planned Parenthood and other neighborhood clinics. I got the morning-after bill from them…” (emphasis added) nother survivor explained that she got pregnant six times while being trafficked and had six abortions. She said, “At least one of my abortions was from Planned Parenthood because they didn’t ask any questions. … I had so much scar tissue from these abortions because there was no follow-up and in a couple of cases I had bad infections, so bad that I eventually lost my fallopian tubes [and had to have a hysterectomy].” (emphasis added) This is so sad, should make everybody sick to their stomach
So what exactly is your take on that, that PP should ask more questions to determine if someone is being trafficked?
Based on this part of the story, it seems like a good idea to include that as part of the training. Being able to recognize the signs of trafficking and knowing what questions to ask. Former senior advisor for trafficking in persons for the U.S. Department of State, Laura J. Lederer explained, “Since pimps and traffickers generally exercise nearly complete control of their victims, these points of contact with healthcare represent rare opportunities for victim identification and intervention.”
The irony if there is any truth to this is that right wing attacks and regulations on PP probably are the reason that they are extra cautious when it comes to gathering information from patients.
I certainly don’t disagree with that. Same with the emergency departments that the story says are used more than community clinics.
Well I'm sure getting rid of PP will turn those sex traffickers into upstanding family men and not have them force back-alley abortions on their victims.
A couple of comments. First, the author of the article is anti-abortion activist who I would guess has a strong animosity towards Planned Parenthood. Secondly, the young woman cited as an example went to multiple clinics and according to her own statement she only went to a Planned Parenthood clinic once although from the title of the article one would get the impression that Planned Parenthood Clinics were the sole of source of medical care received by victims of trafficking.
I read awhile back that they're pushing training for hotel staff. Could misremember but seem to recall that perhaps the training was being required by DBPR?
Since you posted it, I thought you might say what exactly made you sick about it. But no problem, Kygator stepped up with a good answer.
Further evidence our government is an enabler in sex trafficking. Of course, when family Joe Biden is finally forced to admit how many grandkids he has you then understand he's the cause of the problem.
I wonder if this is a situation where you'd rather someone be able to get treatment without a lot of questions being asked so at least they are getting treatment. If a trafficer thinks they run the risk of being caught, they won't bring their victim in at all. Shitty situation, but I certainly understand if that is the case.
