The message the film was conveying went over your head. BTW, Barbie's incredible success isn't really helping the claim you made a little while back that people don't want to see "preachy" movies. ;)

He can’t see the Barbie movie with his son without being accused of being a gay groomer. The accusing account has almost a million followers. Twitter notes did reflect the truth, but it’s telling, not to mention the comments.

A certain contingent is punching the air at the massive success of Barbie. Too bad!

Pretty funny that the word used is woke. It’s more apt that you guys are asleep, as you seem more like zombie followers…
Enjoy your weirdo movies, nobody gives a shit. Lol.

They still have their Bud Light boycott to feel good about, though.

Yeah the Barbie boycott didn't exactly catch on. It's one thing to boycott certain products like Bud light which appeal primarily to men based upon concerns over so-called trans issues. It's another thing entirely to tell the women in your life that they're not going to see the movie that they look forward to and that all of their peers are talking about

Yes, people wanted to see Barbie for the plot, not for the sets, the cast, or the costume design.

Shoehorning in preachy politics via this Trojan Horse of an iconic brand and nostalgia ridden sets and costume design doesn't prove the point that you think it does. All it proves is that Hollywood wants to push the message, and they understand that the most effective way of doing that is by shoving it in with iconic franchises and nostalgia.

I think it also helps that a huge audience for the film was young adult women, not men. And the message of the film resonates with many young women, but I'd argue that wasn't even the central appeal of the film for them. Abandon the "Barbie" brand, and remove Ryan Gosling and Margot Robbie, and nobody cares about this movie.

Be honest guys, do you think modern movies are typically better than movies even 15 years ago?

Despite the resources and the money, most movies nowadays are just corporate soulless stupid entertainment. No heart behind any of it. Occasionally there are exceptions and occasionally that corporate soulless stupid entertainment is in fact entertaining, but it can't touch what Hollywood regularly gave us even 15 years ago.

Here are the top grossing movies of 2008:

Domestic Box Office For 2008 - Box Office Mojo

Interestingly enough, there's a Christopher Nolan movie, and and Indiana Jones movie in the top 10, so parallels with 2023. First Marvel movie in Iron Man. I dont think there is anything on this list that is that much "better" than stuff coming out today (with maybe the exception of Step Brothers/Pineapple Express type comedies - don't think a movie where a 20 something guy is dating a girl in HS is going to fly now). I think you'd have to go a little further back.

Oppenheimer was fantastic. That said, top to bottom it's not close. Tropic Thunder is classic and is down at 19. Step Brothers at 24, Zohan at 25.

I said comedies might be the lone exception (but Zohan, cmon lol). I actually think better original horror movies are coming out vs 2008, so I dont think its as neat as you say. But in general I dont think the quality is much different. But if you go back to list from like 1998, its a very stark difference IMO. I think the main difference is that there are just fewer movies made for a general adult audience. Everything tries to hit that PG13 sweet spot.

Zohan is absolutely hilarious. Any other opinion is objectively incorrect.
