Funny you mention it, because that's exactly what happened. The Biden administration sought to do something privately, thinking their secret was safe, but behold along came a whistleblower who blew their cover. Now, doubts about the government's Covid narrative have never been more fervent. The secrecy has only served to reinforce the people's suspicion. Unfortunately, we know now this extends beyond Covid. There was the Hunter Biden laptop story that was actively suppressed. Which is why we should never allow government to get away with this shit from the beginning. It starts with something guised as a "public's best interest" and quickly morphs into political cover and propaganda.

With DeSantis, what you see is what you get. He's not bashful about what he's doing or why he's doing it. Even if I don't agree with what he's doing, I know what his motives are, because he's been very transparent and open about it. When agencies are weaponized in private, when censorship is being pushed in clandestine manner, that just feeds the distrust of government even more so and with good reason. Obviously.

DeSantis is so transparent he signed his most distasteful bills in the middle of the night with no accompanying press conference hoping few people would notice.

That’s my point. According to your version of events, both Biden and DeSantis acted in a way that would most accomplish their specific goals of silencing speech. Neither act suggests that the politician in question would bat an eye to adopt the other’s approach, should the moment demand it.

In an actual event where we had to choose between someone who publicly flouts the first amendment and one who does so privately, I’d simply vote third party.

Biden WH wanted anyone who disagreed with their Covid policy taken off of social media. That is unbelievable and I don’t care which party it happened under. It’s messed up.

Yes they're distributing a public health message. I'm sure the Trump WH did that, the Obama WH, the next WH, etc. Even Twitter under Elon is processing requests from various governments around the world.

LOL, they were silencing true facts, not just conspiracy theories. Why anyone would want the govt to have the power to suppress speech is beyond me. I guess they like authoritarian govt…

I don't agree with that. You're making an assumption that requires quite the leap in understanding. What examples do you have of DeSantis sneaking around to limit Disney's speech? Everything he did was in broad daylight. I do not agree DeSantis would do it just as easily as Biden did in secret. Much the of reason DeSantis is doing it in the first place is so he can thump his chest in public about how he's cracking down on woke. You may disagree with his policies, but you can't say he's coy about them.

It’s the argument I made above, where private threats are not effective as a public deterrent.

And I have no idea if either would do what the other is accused of. I’m not even convinced Biden did anything to begin with. But I still consider such 1a violations to be disqualifying, so I won’t be voting for DeSantis. Hopefully, a decent 3rd party candidate emerges.
